Cab tuning & Sealed cabs ..

Sign in to disble this ad
After reading much on here about cabs, and the repetitive comments regarding speaker sizes (both accurate and perceived), a couple questions come to mind ...

... if a cab is 'tuned' by port sizing and cab volume for the selection of the driver used, is it possible to 're-design' frequency reproduction by altering the size of the porting somewhat once the cab is in the end users hands?? (provided of course that someone has done a bit of research and knows what they are doing)?? Part of this inquiry is brought on by the 'one size fits all boxes used by many of the companies ...

... and, has any cab manufacturer ever designed a cab that was in some way 'tuneable' by the end user (in terms of porting)??

... also, with regards to sealed cabs, I notice that the boxes they are in can be smaller in overall size than their ported counterparts ... and, if I remember correct, some cabs actually use individual 'chambers' within the cab to house each speaker ... is this the method of 'tuning' a sealed cab (by internal volume) and is there a pro (or con) from isolating each speaker within the cab vs. non partioning for each driver??

... I hope these random thoughts make sense to the knowing crowd capable of answering them .. thank you

You can change port tuning by blocking the port, or changing the length, easiest with tub ports where you can telescope them. The now discontinued Barefaced Vintage had the option of lowering the tuning by blocking off port sections for more vintage sound.

Sealed cabs don't have the same sort of tuning, the advantage of separate chambers is that if one speaker dies, the others are isolated from it, otherwise, it becomes a passive radiator and gives the cab a inappropriate tuning, meaning it wounds bad and then if you don't stop playing it, the other speakers will follow.

Duke's Thunderchild has dual round ports which can be plugged if desired.
