Cab volume/air movement

Sign in to disble this ad
I have long been aching for a fEarful cab. I lack the know-how to DIY, and didn't think I could afford to have one built for me.

I've befriended a guy in my local area who builds speaker cabinets, and has experience with his own designs, the designs of Bill Fitzmaurice, and others. After our band used one of his subs at a show, I was sold on his expertise.

He and I discussed a fEarful build. He is very interested in doing this, and would do it for practically free if I undertake the cost of the components, which I am willing to do.

Therefore... I need to figure out which fEarful would be best for me. I play in an alternative rock band that covers mostly 90s songs interspersed with our originals. I use a Peavey 412 TVX with a Hartke 5500 head. We have two relatively loud guitar players.

Which fEarful design would be comparable to a Peavey 412 TVX in volume capability?

I was thinking 15/15/6/6, since that is the largest. But if I could get away with something more portable and smaller, that would be ideal.

Thanks in advance

A pair of 15/6's or a 15/6 and a 15 sub would outdo your 412 if you have the amp to take advantage of them. Your Hartke may not push them all the way to their limits but it will be damn loud. Might be able to make some of the 12" woofer options get you there.

For comparison, one of those 15's can achieve the displacement of a lot of "regular" 215's, the 12, common 212's. Provided you've got the amp to do it. Use that as a measuring stick.

Many users should be chiming in soon.

That sounds like an excellent proposal. I'd jump on that right away - before your builder changes his mind...

If you want to move maximum air, the 1515/66 is clearly the way to go. Or if you prefer the modular approach (I certainly do), get a 15/6 + 15/6. Or just a 15/6 + 15 sub. Be sure to download or print the schematic(s) for the design(s) you want, and get 'em into your builder's hands ASAP - so he's got exactly the right specs from which to work.

Just make sure your amp has the necessary horsepower for the task at hand. IMHO, the Hartke 5500 won't cut it. If you like really want a Hartke, the LH1000 is reputed to be a very good, low-cost mate for a big fEarful rig. I'd sell your Peavey 412TVX and the Hartke 5500, and reinvest the proceeds accordingly...

How would a 15/6 pair with a Genz Benz Shuttlemax 9.2 or 12.0?

I'd get a pair of 15/6 and never buy another cab again. The end.

With appropriate amplification for power, a double 15 fEARful setup would kick the crap out of a 4x12 rig. And not by a little bit.

In terms of sheer power accessibility, the 9.2 will be a better match than the 12.0: 500 watts @ 8 ohms vs. 375 watts @ 8 ohms.

Want an even better deal, for even more power? Get a Carvin BX1500 or B2000...

At most gigs, I only have the volume on 2. I think I could honestly get by with a 15/6.

The fEarful site says a 15/6 can get comparable (not in air movement, but sheer volume) to a 610.
