Cabinet dilemma...

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a great bass head (one of the first Thunderfunks, which is 400w into 4 ohms).

I've been ruminating about my bass cabinet woes for some time.

Right now, I have an old Duncan Bass 115 cab. It's thrashed. I also find myself wishing it had a bit more midrange detail to go along with the old school thump.

I need to be able to keep up with a live drummer in a small club, so I'm thinking running my head at 4 ohms probably makes sense.

Oh, I play a 4-string, so low B fundamentals aren't a big concern.

For me, the ideal cab would be:
  • 4 ohm
  • <60lbs (my old back just ain't what it once was)
  • Good old school tones
  • No rat fur (my cats just tear that stuff up)
  • <17" deep (my truck bed has a hard cover)

I'm thinking of going for an Acme Low B2.

I considered (and still might bite) on the new Avatar TB153, although early reviews have been somewhat negative.

Any thoughts, experiences, insights, etc.?

if I were to do it again, I'd probably go for the Avatar 2x12 neo

I really seem to like the tone of a pair of 12's.

I don't think that the reviews have been negative at all. There are a few concerns voiced from the big hitters in cab design, by comparing it to a custom built cabinet that is ideally laid out. But still the overall consesus is that this cab, even at $499 (vs intro price) is a great cab for the money.

I have one on order and will certainly post a review when it arrives.

I am seriously thinking of an Acme Low B2 in 4 ohms. Anyone have any thoughts about pairing this with my Thunderfunk head? It's one of the early 400w heads.

Acme says this about the Low B2:

"High power handling. 350W RMS is a good starting point due to the relatively low efficiency of the cabinet. 500W RMS is ideal. The more power, the better the sound."

which is kind of freaking me out. It seems as if I need relatively high efficiency from the cab, not low efficiency.

I wish I lived someplace where I could try this stuff out before buying.

Postscript

I decided on the Acme B2.

I ordered a 4 ohm but Andy mistakenly sent me an 8 ohm. I didn't notice it until I was already at the gig and was trying to fill a room.

Anyway, I dig how insanely linear the cab is. It really told me some things about my instrument setup (pickup heights were a bit out of whack).

Andy graciously sent a 4 ohm right out to me. I'm hoping to get it in time to try this weekend.

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.
