Cabinet from fliptops.net

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm considering bying a 1X15 cabinet from fliptops.net designed to fit a 70's ampeg v4b (slightly wider than original ampeg 1X15 and with v4b blue/silver grille). Has anyone tried these cabinets? Are they ok? Does anyone have a recommendation for which speaker i should go for? Looking for a fliptop kind of sound, vintage and warm but punchy. I'm thinking maybe a jbl k140 will do the job... any opinions? I live in Norway so I am not able to test it first...

Thanks, Fritz

I've not ordered anything from that site, but just from visiting it 5 seconds ago it looks to me that their products are mainly for folks that want the "vintage correct" reproduction parts. What their asking for an unloaded cabinet is a lot of cash.

Unless you're a stickler for proper equipment, I'd order just the hardware and buy a sheet of 1/2 void free plywood and build it yourself.

If you do some digging for parts you can probably get all the hardware, excluding driver, for 150-200 usd.

Also the flip top cabs are easy to build since they're a sealed design. Research for the volume of the box that you want to build, there are nearly infinite resources here on TB for construction methods.

Jimmy M has a b15 reproduction cab from them and he vouches for their build quality. Others have as well. They are definitely vintage reproduction cabs. Nothing scientific about their cab designs. Just good quality cabinetry finished to look and probably sound authentic.

bruce builds nice stuff. plus he builds pretty much all of the vintage ampeg cabs you can't get anymore, and other than not staining the inside of his b-15 cabs, is faithful to the original designs. i don't think he asks for so much considering his cabs are built by hand to order.

Thanks for good advise

Thanks for good advise. I am not thinking about a b15 replica really, it's the 1X15 cabinet which is custom made to fit 70's v4b. It's ported so i figure it will give me a kind of fliptop sound.

This(ported, 450$):
Fliptops

or this(sealed 399$):

Fliptops

Any speaker recommendations? Do you recommend the ported or the sealed one?

It costs about 350$ to ship to Norway so i guess it will be expensive but I really wan't to keep my v4b but i haven't found a cabinet that matches that amp yet since it is so wide.

Thanks, Fritz

I say buy the cabinet from Fliptops and be donw with it. He has a good reputation here and he can also supply you with a speaker that will get you the tone you are after. Trying to build one yourself would probably cost you more in the end than buying one. I think a VB-4 with a matching fliptops built cabinet would be very, very nice and somewhat unique.
