Cabinet on it's side?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys,

I picked up a Hartke 4200 yesterday. I am going to be running it with my Aguilar 2x12. The problem is the 4200 (4x10) is bigger than the 2x12.

The 4200 is somewhat awkwardly shaped and I was considering laying it on its side to stack the 2x12 on top.

2 Questions:

1. Is it unheard of to have your high end 4x 10 under your low end speakers?

2. Can I cause any damage to the cab by running it on it's side?

Thanks,

Are you running it with a crossover or is the same signal going to both cabs?

They are running from a power amp with 2 channels and a crossover.

Thanks,
1. Both cabinets should be getting the full-range signal, so neither is 'technically' the "low end" cabinet. Neither is a subwoofer, right? Shouldn't matter at all which is on the bottom. The Aguilar is probably going to be better sounding, so I'd put it on top and elevate it closer to your ears anyway.

2. No.

When I've run a 410 and 212 together before I actually put the 410 on the bottom to move more air, so I can hear the sweeter tone of the 212 higher up.

And no- no damage to them on their sides. I do this in rehearsal w/ my cabs.

One totally unrelated but interesting experiment for those with casters- laying the cab on the side so it's directly on the floor makes a significant difference in sound as it's coupled with the floor. Try it out sometime if you haven't.

+11, definitely. It's actually interesting to try out two exact cabs stacked on top of one another and how their voicings differ when the top is coupled to the bottom cab which is separated from the floor by casters. I was having an issue with this last night @ rehearsal so just put both cabs (w/ casters attached) on the ground. Instant moar win.
