Cabinet Recovering

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an SWR 6x10 (with the cloth covering) and the covering has been chewed and torn off by rats. Weird, I know.

I've called just about every carpet/covering business within a 20 mile radius of my house, and noone knows how to do it.

Any websites, etc. that will do it that you know of? Or do you DIY?

You can get latex backed carpet and 3m super 77 spray glue from, for example, parts express, and DIY.

GET A CAT!!!!!

I have not had luck with 3M Super 77. I have used just plain old Elmer's white glue or yellow carpenters glue. It is easy to clean up with soap and water. I also tape the snot out of the cab with blue painters tape.

I would never use Elmers glue to put carpet on. It's too slow to dry. I use the spray glue 3M 77 available at Nome Despot. That and a heavy rolling pin work perfectly for me.

If you're looking for someone else to do it, find a good custom car audio installation shop (not Best Buy!). They should be used to covering the subs that they build for installations and this shouldn't be a big stretch for them.

Of course you could strip it down and DuraTex the cab if you want something different.

I'm weighing my options on a SWR Triad that I have in the garage. My wallet says DIY, but my schedule and ability to do it correctly the first time says take it to the car audio shop.

Good luck!

You could strip it then take it to one of those spray on truck bed liner places. That would be more durable than carpet.

I've never had a problem with 3m 77. You have to spray it on the back of the carpet and on the wood and then let it dry for 3-5 minutes before joining the two. After that the bond is sufficient.

That said, I don't have a cat. Maybe try the super 90 if the 77 isn't holding, but not Elmer's. Another trick is to super glue the corners of the carpet at the joints, although if you lay out your carpet correctly the corner joints should fall underneath the cabinet corner protectors.

recovered 810 & head.

Having others do the work is a safe out. There is no one source for info here. The methods vary as do the materials. If you want to do it yourself just Google tolex (or other) cabinet refinishing. Many links pop up. The single best source for materials is Mojo Musical Supply although there are hundreds out there. I landed getting the tolex off of eBay and the glue locally. I read all about using water based cements with vinyl since it's easy to reposition, etc... I landed up using 3M Super 77 in a quart can and it was fine. Just have a wall paper roller handy for the seams and to roll the bubbles out.
I recently re-tolexed a Fender 810 and 300 Pro cab. What a pain since I was manhandling each piece by myself. All I can say is that it turned out great and was actually fun. Just save the old covering to use as a rough template to get a start.
