Talking Calling all Ampeg 810 owners!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up an empty SLM model 810 classic, and I have a few questions.

1. Unfortunately this is an all chipboard model, is it worth using or should I scavenge the hardware and burn the rest?

2. Are the eminence b810s the best replacements as far as drivers go, or are there better alternatives?

3. Is there a wiring diagram anywhere online that coincides with the stock colored wiring scheme?

4. The tolex is trashed and I have a buddy willing to spray it with truck liner for just the cost of materials. Is there any special prep work that needs to be done before we shoot it?

Grace me with your knowledge O' Wise Ones!

1. hey, it's a cab, it's there, so why not use it?

2. good question. that's what i would use, but i've heard of folks on here being quite happy using the jensen mod 10-50's because of their sonic resemblance to the old cts speakers in the original flatback 810s. won't get the power handling of the b810's but it was a popular replacement till the b810 came out.

3. there must be but i don't know where. however, if the wiring harness is still in place inside each compartment, it's pretty simple to figure out. just keep positives to positives and negs to negs.

4. pull off all the old tolex, and clean with a good adhesive remover and lacquer thinner, and then sand it till the black gooey stuff disappears. any leftover adhesive is a spot where the bedliner won't stick.

That bedliner stuff is give you some nasty scrapes if you are not careful. Not to mention anything else that it comes into contact with.

JimmyM thanks so much for the input, I figured I could count on you!
Madmatt - as far as the liner goes, I am trying to find a brand that doesn't have the nonslip grit mixed in.

I have always had ported cabs, and found them to be boomy and flabby down low. I am really hoping I get get the punch I have been looking for with this cab! I think my LM3 and VT pedal should should pretty good.

Also, I am having trouble finding some replacement skid rails. Anyone have any input?

Found the DIY skid rail thread, that should work fine.

Here's a tip ... on the speaker issue, no matter what you load it with, use a gasket between the speaker and the baffle board, the foam weatherstripping that has one side with adhesive, is a good gasket for sealing the speaker, it's available at the home centers .... as to the skid rails, I've used 1"x1" oak strips, you'll have to pre-drill the screw holes and countersink them, so you don't split the wood, just attach them before you apply the bedliner and mask off the face of the rail and just paint that black.
