Can I run a 4 ohm and an 8 ohm cabinet at the same time on my Carvin B800

I just picked up an SWR workingman 2x10T (8 ohms) and wondering if I can use it at the same time I use my Avatar 212 (4 ohm). The SWR has 1/4" jacks only, two of them....one in....one out to connect another cab. My avatar cab has both speakon and 1/4" and so does my Carvin head.

Carvin says my B800 can be used in 8, 4, or two ohm configurations and develops 500 watts at 4 ohms and 800 watts at two ohms (dont remember the 8 ohm rating....probably somewhere between 200 and 300 watts I would guess.

a 4 ohm cab mixed with an 8 ohm will give you a final output of 2.66 ohms or something like that. as long as your head says it will work with 2 ohms it is fine. one caution would be that it would be running really hot at the 2 ohm load

Yes, I have done it with that head (and an Avatar 212 as well.) No problems.

well, looking at the Carvin site, we see this: http://www.carvinguitars.com/manuals/BRX212.pdf

which shows a few things.

1. The B800 has both Speakon and 1/4" output jacks
2. Shows that 4Ohm and 8Ohm cab combination is just fine

However, just keep in mind that there will be unmatched amounts of the amps total power going to the cabs. The 4ohm will draw more than the 8ohm. This may not be an issue in your playing situation, but just keep it in mind.

good luck.

Just curious, would the amp be pushing the full 800 watts with a 2.66 ohm load?

I plan on doing a similar thing with an avatar 2x12 at 4 ohms 1x12 at 8 and a carvin bx 500. The avatar will get around 533 watts or so the swr would get 240 so i think that would work for you.

No. It would be somewhere between the 500 and 800 ratings with the 4 ohm cabinet carrying more than the 8 ohm.
