I have 2 small kids an when I want to practice at night I'd like to be able to disconnect the cab and use the direct out into a small mixer to practice with headphones? Will I damage the head using it this way without a cab connected?

Yes, you can do it. No, you won't damage the head.

No damage will result, but why not just plug straight in to the mixer if it is just for practicing using headphones?

It says you can use it without a cab on the Markbass website under Q&A.
