Can someone help clear this up for me?

If I have two speakers rated at 600 watts continuous at 8 ohms...

And QSC says I should go for a 1200 watt amp...

Should I be getting an amp that says it can go to 1200 watts at 8ohms? Or one that goes to 1200 watts at 4ohms?

When you have two speakers rated at 8ohms hooked up to the same amp, that's a 4ohm load, right?

1200 watts at 4 ohms.

Yes, it creates a 4 ohm load and both cabinets will receive 600 watts.

Yes and no. It's not what you'd call a professional's amp.

Realistically you don't probably don't need half that amount of power. Just because speakers say they take 600W doesn't mean you can give them 600W of RMS bass for very long, perhaps only a fraction of a second if you eq heavy.

Nearly all of your loudness comes from the first 200W per cabinet.

Overkill, but yes. I have the sx1200 running my 8x10 ( bridged mono). It sounds good, is very loud and doesn't break a sweat keeping up with 2 x100w half stacks and a loud drummer. I think I have the power amp on 3 lol

I was just going by what QSC recommended. The specs say "600 W cont. (200 W, 24 hr. pink noise)" So something that delivers about 200 watts to each speaker is probably all we'd need.

Perhaps a Crown XLS1000? 350 at 4ohms and 215 at 8ohms.

The room isn't huge either, so having a ton of watts would definitely be over kill.

You can always use less wattage.

I would recommend you look at the Peavey IPR series. Inexpensive, stupidly light, and low power draw.

I have the IPR 1600 which I generally use to power monitors, so I don't need much power.

What are you using the amp for?

Main loudspeakers for a house of worship.

The Crown XLS series are a great choice.

I would always rather have a higher quality but lower wattage amp if that's the tradeoff that needs to be made.

Get a better quality 300-500w/side amp and you'll probably end up with more headroom anyway (higher quality amps are usually rated at lower distortion levels, meaning they are closer to their stated numbers).

Samson is ok, but probably not great.

These would probably be better choices...

QSC GX5 | Sweetwater.com

Crown XLS 1500 | Sweetwater.com

Crown XLS 2000 | Sweetwater.com

Crown XTi 1002 | Sweetwater.com

Yamaha P3500S | Sweetwater.com

QSC RMX1450 | Sweetwater.com

Those are the ones I would probably be looking at in your situation.

It was brought to my attention that we have a decent but slightly older QSC power amp which looks like one of the RMX series. I think we're going to try to just find another one like that so we can power four speakers.

+1 on the RMX series

The only reason I sold mine was that @ 40lbs or so it really drove up the combined weight of my rack rig. In a fixed-installation situation that's not really an issue

Otherwise, it was simply an outstanding poweramp. 100% reliable. Lots of useful options like the built in HP filters. One thing I found especially valuable (for my own rig) was that the input sensitivity was significantly better than a comparable Crown power amp - Ampeg SVP preamp drove it with no problem
