Can SVT CL Bias lights go bad?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought a new set of tubes for the Ampeg SVT CL and I cannot get the right bank to Bias... the green light will not light at all. It is not a tube problem as I switched the tubes to opposite banks and the problem stayed on the right side. All the tubes are lighting up.

Am i screwed having to take it to a tech here?

You will most likely need to take it to a tech. I have seen that happen when a tube blows on an SVT CL. It can take out several small components in the amp and make it so it's impossible to bias.

Hi.

Welcome to TalkBass jgilcrest.

Yep, tech time is the wisest, and in the long run cheapest move.

If there's a problem with either the bias- or the bias metering circuit, You are risking the life of the tubes and the amp.

Sam

Well... yes they can... and yes, it seems to be tech time.....

That said, why are you replacing tubes?

What's the background to this question? Seems that there HAS to be something more going on.

If something drastic happened, then the advice is good on the basis of possible damage.

If you are "just replacing tubes", and the old set did "work" even if they were weak, then, there is some question about the amp itself...... and maybe the tubes. Assuming that the tubes really do work in one side but not the other.

Do the old tubes still do the same thing? Is that why you replaced them?

if only the new ones do it, there is a chance the tubes are too "hot" for the bias range in the amp, possibly not by much, so one side is for some reason capable of just reaching the needed level. They might be real "limit case" tubes that need a lot of bias.

if that is not the case, and the old tubes did it too, probably either the bias lights are bad, or there is another problem. Also tech time, but expectations of what might be wrong are different in that case.

If you needed to change power tubes it wouldnt be a bad idea to change the driver tubes. They wear out faster than the pre tubes. I would let a tech look at it though before blowing more power tubes.

The same thing happened to my CL and it was just a bad driver tube. I replaced the bad driver tube and the green light was back on!

The bias goes through the driver tube, so that is good advice.

you can swap the driver tubes to find out...... epecially since you are going to bias it anyway. Reverse them and see if the problem "follows the driver", or stays put.

Obviously if it follows the driver tube you know what to do......................

I will most definitely try the driver switch... thank you for ONE more possible self fix There are no GOOD techs around here (one suggested my tubes were not matched appropriately and needed to buy HIS tubes... the more he talked the more i could tell he needs business and not interested in FIXING what could REALLY be wrong... so i gotta look to Los Angeles for a decent tech... and recommendations?)

I replaced the tubes because ONE was blown (something was rattling around in it, too)... which i've been reading is a waste of money, but the Loudtek dude highly recommended a matched sextet because old tubes are more worn than new ones blah blah blah... anyway... I bought 6... and this bias problem emerged on the same side that the blown tube was on.

Checking the driver tomorrow, thank you... fingers crossed.
