Can you use a combo amp as a speaker cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
*Yet another dumb amp question.

I just got my 700rbII today from another TB'er but I haven't received the Neo 210 cab.(It just shipped out today and probably wont be here till the weekend) So i was wondering could I run my new head through my current GK MB115 (which I am currently trying to sell on the Classifieds).

Im really really really anxious to try my new head out but dont want to fry the cab or the head. Let me know if i'm good, cause i would really have to wait like more days to play it.

If the cab has a jack instead of being internally wired, why couldn't you? I actually put a jack on my Ashdown Five Fifteen to see whether I'd like my SWR Workingman 12 with a 15 extension.

Unless the combo amp has a jack for the speaker, (which it probably doesn't), then no, you'll either have to wait for your cab to arrive, or modify the combo amp to give it a speaker jack.

Don't connect the speaker out from the 700rb to any input on the amp in the combo. That's just asking for trouble.

If you think about it, the output of 700rbII is several hundred watts. The input of an amp is designed to handle tiny changes in current, or in the extreme case the power of 2 batteries.
If the amp survives that, you'd still run a twice amplified signal into the speaker, which is much more than it can handle, especially if the signal is distorted, which it would be.

If you just want to tinker with the EQ and other controls on the new head, run a 1/4" patch out of the jack labeled "preamp out" on the head to the post EQ effects return (there be only one effects loop) on your combo.

With this setup, you be using the new head as a preamp and the the combo's power stage.

Unfortunately, there is no effect return on the combo, so you will just have to wait until you greet the speaker cab.

yes we have established that fact. its on its way from Florida as of this evening. i was able to test the head though using a Tacsam gt-r1 i had laying around. didn't have enough time to tinker with it.
