Carvin BR118 cab specs?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, I did a search and though there was some talk of BR118 users, they gave no details of this cab, other than the BRX line is, lighter, smaller in size and just better.

I have a chance to pick up a BR118 tomorrow for pretty cheap, bout $125. I happen to have a large outdoor gig this Saturday, I'm thinking I'd like to use it for that. I play in a 5 pc blues-rock band, guitarist and keys can get pretty loud at times, but thier good with dynamics, mostly. The drummers' not outta hand, good control, never too loud outdoors. Instruments get no PA support, cept kick drum and keysplayer, the diva.

Outdoors, I've used a Eden 410xlt (4ohm)+ 210xlt (8ohm) or two GB Neox 212T's ( so 4x12's) powered by either a B1500 or now my new two cab setup, two MB F1's, each head goes into each 4 ohm cab. Seller says the BR118 is 4 ohms, 400-800 watts, that's all I got. Tho when I called him he said he replaced his BR118 + Peavey 410 with a BRX rig, like 118/410 I believe he said. He did say the BR cab is larger/heavier than the BRX118, I figured that.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows the actual dimensions of this cab, actual weight and if its even worth getting/using a 118 cab? I know a 410 will do better, but I have a few outdoor gigs coming up and thought the 118 cab would do well for that. And with 6 cabs now, I don't need another one, just wanting to try this 118 cab, you know G.A.S.

Of course, I've done OK with my current cab setups, just felt this was a pretty good deal, $$-wise and a chance to try a maybe decent 118 cab. I went thru a Yamaha 118/SWR 410 setup once at a large outdoor gig and it really put out the big lows, I dug it. I don't think I've ever heard myself like that since. I'll put either a 112 or 210 or even a 212 on top of the 118.

Now, I dont relish carrying a big, heavy cab for nothing, my 410xlt is already a beeyotch to tote, but it sounds good. And there's only so much room in back of my SUV. So besides getting the 118 cheap, might be fun to hear my Pbass outta it. I'll mostly use the two F1's 500 watts @ 4 ohms, anyone feel it just aint worth the hassle. I prefer old fart replies, I know you young guns can handle it. But if you can speak of this cab, bring it.

WOAH!!!!

Stop The Presses!!!!!

went back to look at the dudes ad and title says BR118 but a closer look at pic shows, RL 118 Red Line series, 4 ohms 800 watts, has 2 1/4" inputs on back, no attenuator, so that's good no horn. No quiero horn-o.

SO can anyone now speak to the specs of the Carvin RL 118 cab? Is this cab date like outta the 80's, 90's? I've read alot of dislikes of the Redline series. But again, for the money, is this RL118 still a good deal, for occaisional outdoor gigs with a 112 or 210 on top, with about 500 watts into each cab?

I mean, tone-wise, weight-wise, size-wise.....otherwise, I'll just stick to my current cabs, no big loss and NO I won't consider buying a new Carvin BRX-118, don't need one that bad. This used one is cheap and so am I. Thanks all.

thanks will33...

when I saw the URL, I thought you were pulling my leg....Carvin Museum indeed, lol.

But know its right there, RL118, shows the specs I was looking for. Only difference is the one Im looking to buy shows 4 ohms, 800 watts instead of 600 watts. But I imagine this series ran for awhile at Carvin and there was subtle tweaking along the way.

Well, if I decide to get this rather large, heavy RL118, could I later buy the neo-118 I see on Carvins' site and drop it into this RL cab to lighten the weight abit. Thereby having a more decent, lighter 118 cab?

Oh, does anyone have any recent experience with a RL118? I did a search last nite and saw where folks were back n forth on this cab. As usual, some loved it, some hated it. Sorta leaning towards passing on this cab and just use what I got already cab-wise. Thanks for any more info.

I used to have a RL118, in the same model as the one you are looking at (800 watts @ 4 ohms).

I did not find it to be that heavy at all - pretty easy to move and lift.

I used to use it in my practice rig combined with an 8 ohm Avatar 2X12 (non-neo).

I powered it with a B1500.

The difference in ohm load worked quite well because the 18 is less efficient than the 2X12, and needed more power to be heard. Although the 2X12 was good on it's own, the 1X18 added some serious ground shake to the equation.

thanks bass pounder..

yep, after finally seeing the specs, it aint really that big or heavy. I mean my Eden 410xlt is pretty bulky, heavier and I use it alot. And I may use my B1500 tomorrow, its not been out lately, so why not. In my search I did see "bass pounder" pop up quite abit on the RL118, threads went back to '08'-'06 pretty quick, so I know this cab is an older, heavier style.

Now, my big rig solution has been the B1500 and two GB Neox 212T cabs, that rig sounds real nice. And though its 2 cabs, they're light, smallish and easy to carry around. Plus I would prolly always use a second cab with the RL118. The second cab might be Eden 210xlt, no lightweight itself. So I may just heavy my load burden by bringing in a 118 cab. I always use 5 string basses so wonder how the RL118 handles that.

But I'm gonna call the guy this evening, if he's not sold the RL118, he's only bout 25 miles north of me, I may take a ride to go look at it. Heck I'll just load it up and leave it in my SUV til the Saturday gig, course I'll toss in the 210xlt or maybe the GB Neox 112T, its much smaller n lighter.

Yeah, I'm at that age where cab/amp weights do affect what rig I lean to for gigs. Sucks getting old-er....tho consider the option, I say bring on the years, I can take it. Uhh, my knees hurt. Thanks all.
