Carvin BX600 - Repair or Replace

Sign in to disble this ad
For 5 or so years I've had my trusty BR610 combo from Carvin. I initially bought it because it came in a few hundred cheaper than building a GK700RB mini stack, which was the amp that I really wanted at the time.

Over the years I've grown to love the versatility of the Carvin, and that tone quickly became the tone that I go for, less agressive than a GK, somewhat old school, round but punchy with a little bit of grown when I needed it.

From the looks of things, the Carvin's given up the ghost. It works as a DI but I believe the transformer in the power amp's been overloaded and will probably cost at least $100-$150 to replace. For not much more than that (Around $250 if I'm patient), I can get a GK700RBII used and put it in the combo, then I can still have my Carvin tone if I want to lug it along and run it into the effects return on the GK, as well as put it on the back burner and eventually repair it.

hmmm...

I would fix the Carvin and also buy the GK, if it's in good shape, then get a gk cab later for a second rig. Gotta have two rigs.

I replied buy the GK first and repair the Carvin later only thinking that if you have any upcoming gigs, you will need a working rig. If that is not the case and you can wait to have the Carvin repaired, go that route, but it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of backup.

Have you called Carvin, or are you just guessing about the repair cost?
