You are comparing a combo amp versus just an amp head - not a fair comparison at all. The 400RB would require a speaker cabinet to make a sound.

What are planning on using the pieces of gear for?

Good bass tone starts with your hands.

I owned a Carvin PB300C for a long time. Solid amp. Not spectacular, but with an extension cabinet it could cover medium sized clubs. I liked the tone better than GK. But that's just me.

i hook the GK up to the carvin pro 300 speaker cab(it needs an external jack), so i am playing both heads thru the same cab
i play small gigs
i am leaning towards the carvin

Eventually you might want to swap the stock Carvin speaker out (if it is still the stock speaker which I think is 8 ohm) for another 15", preferably a 4 ohm 15". The PB 300 runs down to 2 ohms, so you could then add another 4 ohm cabinet (I used to use a 210) to get all 300 watts out of it. The amp served me well for many years and it sounded good. I just wanted to move away from a combo setup.

You can't run both amps into the same speaker at the same time without blowing up all 3 pieces. Maybe you know that and I quickly read that wrong but there ya go.

FWIW, I like a lot of the older Carvin stuff. I think it sounded better than the redlines that followed, but, I have a soft spot for 400/800rb's and would lean that way in this case, although different, either would do the job just fine. Keep the Carvin as a combo and get a nice cab for the 400rb.

The older ones like yours are nice stuff. I used to gig a PB500 I wish I still had.

I used to play a Modulus Q5 through my Carvin PB300C sounded great. But I also upgraded my speaker to a 400 watt Eminence.

I love my GK 400RB 210 Combo. Have had it for 10 years.
