Carvin X100B

I was at my buddy's house last night to jam and record and didn't bring my amp so I used his Carvin X100B head though his Mesa 2x12 cab. It was awesome! I've always been a bit of a Carvin fanboy, and was excited to try it, but I was just blown away at how good my bases sounded through it.

My current rig is a Carvin PB150 through a Carvin 1x15 cab, so I'm sure playing through a tube rig is going to sound differently than my solid state rig. Last week I played through his my Mesa Boogie (Mark V?) head and the same 2x12 cab and it didn't sound nearly as good.

Anyone use the X100B for bass, or have a recommendation for a similar Carvin tube bass amp/head? The later made ones seem pretty reasonably priced, he got his for $300!

I dont know why you are surprised. Playing bass thru an amplifier where all the filters and components are not designed for bass freq is not a good idea. It may sound OK for a while...but the additional stress on all the components will take its toll.

Carvin makes a tube amp that (IMO) is more suited for bass (your choice of bass guitar preamp in front):

I had a, friend years ago that used one for a bass amp, and used it for years, never caused it any damage. A tube amp is a tube amp, the pre-amp tone circuits may not crossover at the same points, but if it's your thing. You will not damage the amp. Here is a video of someone on YouTube doing it too.

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think it would cause any damage. Just wondered of any TBers had done it. Got some major GAS!
