Cheap combo through a bass cab or guitar head through a bass cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a gig on monday in a small hall, I have been offered a bass cab and a guitar head as I only have a small practice combo (a freshman avalanche GB20 that has has a bit of abuse) Volume isn't too much of a problem as I can mic it up, but I don't want to use my combo for that because it sounds horrible.

My guitar is a SR305 and I have tuned the bottom string to drop A, as that is the key of the song we're playing.

Not sure what the question is here, but it will be "safe", in that you won't damage the amp head. Whether it will sound any good depends on lots of things (amp, cab, room). It will likely not be very powerful by bass amp standards, so I hope there's plenty of cab and/or good PA support.

It's only a smallish indoor room, But support will be limited as this is a school gig, I can access a PA, so sound quality is more important than volume, and making sure I don't damage anything.

I'm thinking of getting a splitter and plugging my combo into the cab for the low end and the guitar head directly into the PA for the mids and highs. Would that work?

If the combo has a loop out, you can go from combo loop out to guitar amp loop in, use the guitar amp to power the bass cab while monitoring yourself from the combo. Using both loops takes the guitar amp's pres out of the signal path but gives you full use of the power amp section.
