Cheap Good Amp??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi there,

I have recently started playing bass in a band (first gig tonight, went pretty well i think) however i had to borrow both a bass and amp as i dont own and amp and my bass has some really strange intonation.

Basically, im going to take the bass to my local luthier to have a look at and see if he can fix it up and if not i shall probably go with a squier vintage modified or something.

Back to my main question, i need an amp! what im really looking for is a very basic, functional amp with no frills, but that is loud enough to fill small venues like pubs and clubs. im thinking minimum 30 watts maybe up to 80 ish (ideas?) If anyone has any recomendations id be really grateful!

If you can get your hands on one, try out the Gallien Krueger Backline Combos. The 112 sounds very good. A friend of mine has one for his reversal space, and I used it on a few Jazz gigs with a 5string Bass and it sounded really good!

Cheap and good usually don't go together. Look on the used market for some good gear at affordable prices.

With nothing in your profile, I am guessing that you are not in the US with the price you posted ... FWIW, I wouldnt recommend anything less than 100-200 watts unless you are playing with an acoustic guitar or two ... if you try to make 30-50 watts try to work anywhere else, you will be pushing a LOT of distortion ... not knowing where you are and what you have access to, I think cheap, decent, indestructable, and HEAVY ... I think used Peavey ... an older BA-115 as mentioned might work out nicely too, and there are a LOT of them around used ...

I'd say priority is getting a bass.

Amp: If you are playing with loud acoustic drums, 100-200 watts is ideal.

With cheap stuff: smaller usually means thinner sound. A bigger box and a 15" speaker will carry more than a smaller amp. PA heads sometimes are good alternatives for cheap power.

Buy a used combo of at least 100-200 watts ... I would say, have a look for a Hartke

I agree with that.

I have the Hartke Vx2510, kicks ass live.

Cheap when they're used too.

What sort of band?

Does it have a drummer?

I'd aim for something at the very least over 100 watts if so.

Look around for used Peaveys.

I loved my Five Fifteen, but the amp blew and it ended up costing more to fix than buying a new one, so I did neither.

I got to play the little 5 pound aguilar yesterday. That thing is around 500 bucks. It's solid state but impressive.
