Cheap power conditioner!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I have a 4 U rack that is already full (GK head, Korg tuner, DBX compressor) but I feel that I have to many cables at the back making the back of the rack a mess.

So this is why I feel a cheap power conditioner which can be placed at the BACK of my rack could organize things better and keep the power from the wall nice and clean

I was thinking about these two - The Samson PS10

Or The Furman M-8X both are around £40.

Any one have any advice on this plan/ experience with these two power conditioners.

Thanks again!

I use the Furman M8LX ($85 US) which has the 2 lights in the front. It works for me and helps organize my rack.

I take it this is for visual effect only, correct?

If your rack is full you aren't going to be able to put in another racked item. I would just get a power strip and get creative with some zip ties.

This is pretty much correct for power conditioners in general.

Geez -- he's putting it on the back of rack to clean up the cabling, pay attention.

I did the same thing, not using a power strip because it's unpleasant to try to get it securely mounted and the switch on it is less convenient that on a rack strip.

The furman was cheap and works fine.

As for power conditioning .. it's likely no better than the varistor in a power strip, but that's not the point.

There's a pile of rack mount strips out there, or he could do what I did for years which is use velcro to mount a removable interior strip.

Again, the only reason to have a power conditioner in your rack is for visual effect. Same answer.

while i certainly agree about them being no more than a rugged, rack-mounted power strip, the point is that they are a rugged, rack-mounted power strip.
master power switch can be very handy, though perhaps not so much in a bass rig...

forgot to mention that you should not discount what the diminished interior volume and reduced air flow might do as a result of mounting one of these things in the back. which gk do you have?

i don't think that's too much of a concern as long as no vents are blocked.

Yeah the GK has plenty of air to breath, I keep it at the top of the rack and there is a little gap that helps alot.

The main reason for getting a cheap power conditioner was just for the master switch, this seems very convenient.

As a said before its gonna go in the back of my rack anyway so am not bothered about visual effects.

Thanks again!

If I'm reading this right, you're planning on leaving everything in your rack on, and using the power switch on the power "conditioner" to turn everything on/off - if that's correct, it's a bad idea...

Yup - I doubt using any power "conditioner" could neaten up this setup any more:

Since switching to this, I don't even need an extension cord any more:

How is it for visual effect when it's in the back of the rack?

The point was that power conditioners don't do anything, so no matter what, the only effect is visual.

they trn 1 source of power into multiple sources of power, just like a surge strip. does that mean the surge strip i have under my computer desk is for visual effect? I think not

is it poisslbe to mount something to the back send of one? I've never looked at my rack to see f there's rails on both ends...

also, +1 to NOT using the master switch as an on/off. amps don't like being "on" with no power...

If you are using a moulded case ala SKB, no self stick Velcro will last for long before coming loose. A power strip can be attached at the back with screws or rivets. You can use a similar method to Georgestrings as well using the back rails and a metal bracket.
