Cheap/quick amp diagnostics in the Portland, OR area?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just recieved a GK 800RB with what seems to be some dying filter caps and possibly some other issues and am looking for a reliable tech to give it a look through and possibly provide a quick estimate on some work. The only techs I'm familiar with in town are very-backlogged and also adverse to messing with solid state amps. I would change out the filter caps myself, but the amp was part of a trade, and I don't want to touch it until I know for sure what might be wrong!

Any ideas would be very appreciated!

Thanks,
Karl

Email Steve Kennedy at webmaster@pacair.com and see if he can help you. He does amp repair in Portland.

The only tech that I have used is Jim at Amphead... Does mostly tube, but I have brought some solid-state to him with great results... He can tend to get back-logged, but even then gets stuff completed fairly quickly... (The '59 Bassman restoration on his page is my band leaders amp and is a work of art)

Two others that I've heard good things about, but have never had occasion to use...

Bryan Sours of Soursound... The website looks doa, but TB Member Pandafist is in a band with the guy and could propbably get you some contact info...

Ross out at Tigard Music used to do amp repair, (don't know if he's still there or not)...

Thanks- Brian at Soursound has been the reverberating suggestion so far, and the only tech in town I've actually talked to (he is the one I was referring to as "adverse to messing with SS amps"). He was also very backlogged when my guitarist had him do some work last year. I've been informed that his shop is now a cooperative of techs though, so maybe they have picked up some of his backlogged (and solid state) slack!

Any other options out there?

Thanks again!
