Question Cheaper alternative for the GK Paragon 10 in. 16ohm?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all! This is my inaugural post here on talkbass, and I apologize if the answer I seek is buried here in the threads somewhere.

I have a GK 1001RB 210 combo, and I recently ripped a cone completely off the basket. The other woofer looks like it's going as well, so I'm looking to replace both. GK offers their OEM 16 ohm 10" Paragon for $129 plus shipping, but I'm wondering if there might be a similarly priced or cheaper alternative out there that matches the specs for this box. I've been all over the net looking, and can't seem to find anything. This is turning into my white whale lol...

If anyone has any info or ideas, or can even point me to a thread I may have missed on here, please let me know.

Thanx in advance.

Best option would be the right GK driver. Anything else would be a crapshoot.

Welcome to TalkBass bwanabass!

Like Paul said, the correct G-K drivers are the way to go.

IIRC Gallien-Krueger custom designs and manufactures their own speakers tailored to their amps.

You may wish to consider adding a matching extension cab to your combo if you wish to avoid buying those tens for a third time.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Here's what I did after some extensive research...

I ended up buying a pair of Eminence Delta 10-B's for $60 each. They seemed to have a pretty good range of potential cabinet volumes and types, and nice sensitivity/power handling to go with it.

I installed them and fired it up, and it sounds amazing. I was able to get nice, clear tone and big volume without the speakers farting out like the GK Paragons used to. I play a 5-string, and even with the -db pad off, it was singing.

The most amazing part was the price. I looked for direct replacements from GK and they were going to cost me close to $300 bucks with tax and shipping. For $132 total, I got Eminence speakers that definitely sound like an upgrade to these ears. Time will tell if they will survive a regular gig schedule, but for now, I'm very happy.

BTW, I bought the Deltas on Amazon, from a vendor called "The Price Pros." They were the cheapest I could find, at $59.34 per speaker. I place the order on Sunday night, paid for standard UPS ground shipping, and was expecting them next week, but they arrived today!

Long story short, if anyone out there has a Gallien RB series 2x10 combo, the Eminence Delta 10-B is the replacement/upgrade speaker to go with for sure.

Keep in touch and give us a long term review after a few gigs. BTW, what kind of stuff do you play, and how often do you practice or gig?

Hi all, I'm following up with my thread!

Well, the speakers are holding up very nicely and are still sounding great. I did take a precautionary measure and used some rubber washers to space the metal grill out away from the range of the woofers' cone movement.

I have to say that I'm more than pleased with the Eminence woofers. They are proving quite durable and good-sounding.

I'm pleased the switch worked out for you. It could very easily have gone the other way.

Have you had bad experiences with Eminence products, or are you referring to my cavalier approach to throwing the dice and trying the new woofers so blindly? I am definitely lucky they worked out, and anyone in a similar predicament with a GK 2x10 combo like mine can rest easy replacing the stock speakers with these affordable alternatives.

Cheers!
