checks/trials for 2ndhand cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

I'm changing from Markbass combo to a seperste head and cabinet. My head is still in the post and I'm going to pick-up the cab on Wednesday. I've done a search and checked the first 7 pages of amps n cabs but can't find anything on what to look for when checking out a 2dhand cab.
I'll be using the sellers head to test the 4x10 cab(with tweeter). Other than removing the grill to check the drivers what else should I be doing?

Thank you in advance.

Phil.

Make sure the cab's power rating (watts) is compatible with your new head. If you think you're at all likely to add a second cab in the future, also check the ohms rating of the cab. If your amp is rated at 500 watts at four ohms, then you'd probably want a 500-800 watt four ohm cab, or two 250-400 watt eight ohm cabs.

If you decide to go the two-cab route, you're better off if the two cabs match, so your first cab needs to be something you can find again later.

The head is 300wvalve 4 ohm of 2 ohm.The cab is 400w rms 4 ohm. Its EBS so easy enough to find here in Europe.

EBS makes nice stuff. that should be fine. just listen to it and make sure all the speakers work, including the tweeter. maybe give it a little gas on the volume if you can just to make sure everything is in working order. blown speakers are pretty obvious.

Will do Jimmy. Never had a blown speaker. Is it similar to a farting sound or something completely different?

i always let the seller do the settings/playing/tweaking....if he blows something up it's his problem,if you do,it's yours

it can be a farting sound, absolutely. it can also be a little more subtle, like a distortion that you can hear when you let a note ring. it's pretty obvious when you hear it, but you do have to listen for it. if you hear it, you can check the speaker cones by GENTLY pressing the cone around the dustcap with even pressure and feel for rubbing in the voice coil. a working speaker won't rub.

some sellers are fussy about letting you do stuff like that, though. if he doesn't want you to do it, wave money under his nose until he lets you. if he still doesn't, don't buy it. there will be more cabs. but really, it's pretty obvious when you hear it, so if you can avoid this step, it's probably best.
