I agree. Something is wrong. Either he's lying or the guy replaced an entire set of tubes that were good for no reason at all.

This. Also, what the heck is up with its grill?

I like the half-eaten sardine on the top.

Looks like they made the grill white. Looks like they've got a super scoop going on with that EQ, mids cut, treble and bass boost buttons in. Maybe the tube change was part of their "tone quest" with this amp.

Don't tube amp manuals still tell people to retube power tubes each year and pre tubs ever 5 years?

Some people probably buy into that!

I've never seen that in any tube amp owners manual I have ever seen. I was a Fender dealer from '77 through '88, a Peavey dealer from about '82 through '88, and long-term time Dan of RTFM. I have NEVER seen any amp maker specifying when to change tubes.

My old amp repairman recommended that I replace output tubes in my Music Man HD-130 once a year, but that was based in Wally knowing my high schedule and that amp, not a blanket recommendation for all amps.

Well, as a guitar player who played mostly tube amps, I constantly changed tubes to enhance my tone. While changing tubes can have a subtle difference, it makes a difference nonetheless.

The manual for the SVT-CL says to have the power tubes checked once a year, or sooner if playing heavily, but doesn't say replace at that point.

As Corey pointed out, I got it a little wrong. My mistake, been a while since I read an amp manual!

I wouldn't put it past a less-than-honest tech to recommend replacement at any opportunity so the two (check and replace) could end up being one in the same.

Sadly, that's also true.

Such a tech would no doubt turn around and then flog the healthy tubes he'd just taken out.

You should pull the back off and find out what's in there and mention it on your ad. Winged C's could be a selling point to some.

What's up with the grill?

Fair enough, dude. As long as someone else is picking up the dime for your tubes, it's cool
