So I normally play through a Hartke 7000. Unfortunately my cabs aren't matched very well to it- a 200 watt Hartke 410 and a 350 watt SWR 210/horn- but it does nicely. I take the head only to practice and run it into the practice studio's cabs, which are better matched, and it sounds okay, if a bit muddy.
I also have a cheap practice amp; a Behringer Ultrabass 600 combo. Recently I decided that i didn't like the stock speaker in it, so i drilled it and added an extra speaker out jack so I could add a cab to it. Then one day I took it a step further and separated the amp head (60 SS watts) from the combo and put it in it's own box. Nice and light, too.
Last night I took this head to practice and plugged it into the studio's cabs- Hartke 410 and Crate 410, and was surprised to draw a great Gallien-Krueger-like tone from it... hard, punchy and with a growly bite... I dare say it rivaled the tone I got from another amp I practiced a lot with, the GK 700RB. Very nice tone in spite of the missing natural compression that comes from my Hartke's tube preamp.
No questions posed, just sharing...
