Combine parts from GK cabs?

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, so I have;

GK RB1001 2 head
GK RBH210 8ohm cab
GK RBH210 8ohm cab
GK RBH115 8ohm cab

I'm thinking about asking an amp expert to take the 4 speakers and drivers out of the 2x10s and put them in the 1x15 cabinet. Are there any major reasons that this wouldn't work?

I'm pretty sure the 1x15 cab is the same exterior dims as the GK RBH410. However I'm pretty ignorant about cab tuning etc and whether the interior of my 1x15 cab may be quite different to a GK RBH410. I don't mind having a 4x10 that needs two 8ohm cables to make it total of 4ohm, though a combined 4ohm connection would be better. I have no idea how the horn would be setup, prob one set of 2x10s with horn and one without.

I'm sick of lugging a 2x10 and a 1x15 to practice and would prefer a 4x10. However I don't have the cash to go buy one. Failing my solution above, any suggestions for a good cab match for the RB1001 2.

Cheers

Then why not just lug the 2 x 210s? Usually easier than a single 410, or you could latch the 2 together (see Sundogue's rig for a very cool example of this). In addition, 2 x 210s stacked vertically is better for dispersion and stage volume than a typical "square" 410 arrangement. And significantly better than a 210 + 115 stack.

Yeah that's the back up plan. 2 x 210s is still a fair bit bigger than 4x10 (though slightly lighter individually).

Sundogue's rig is pretty sweet! I might look at that. I love the accessories box below. It solves a lot of the annoyances I've been having lately. 3 trips to unload my gear is 2 too many.

It's a 210 combo AND modular 110 separates all in one......

Dont mess with it. It's too heavy. If you must do it, sell the 15 and by the 410. Most people prefer to modularity of the 2x10.

I have a hand cart, so weight is not such an issue. I'm young enough, strong enough and sensible enough to load it in and out of the car without trouble. I'd like to get it down to one cab rather than two, Anyone know if it would work OK throwing all my 10s(and electronics) into the 1x15 cab, and taking the 15 out obviously.

The 4X10 and the 1X15 cab are the same size externally I think, but the insides should be different. The shelf ports should be different lengths as well. I often question why they were the same size. Either they made speakers that worked like they wanted to in the exact box and port sizes that they already planned on building...or one of those boxes isn't sized as well as it could have been. That aside, if you cut that 15 baffle out and try to replace a new baffle for the 10s, you destroyed a cabinet and have an extra 15 speaker without a home now. you end up with extra parts that you can't sell for nearly as much as what you started with.
What I would do would be to just sell the 1x15 and profit the cash, or find someone with a 4x10 to trade. No sawdust, you get rid of the cab you don't want, and you will get to keep your 2x10 cabs for modularity, or sell them. You actually can make money and get the 4x10.

Thanks Wes, I suspected the insides might be different.

Wes's suggestion is the only sensible option you have, really.

I just downsized from an Ampeg 4x10" to a more modular, 2-cab setup. I would just use the cabs you have if it was me.

oh and the reason I'm using the 115 with the 210 is that the other 210 needs a speaker replaced. Getting back to 2 x 210s will slim down the bulk a little. I only had the second 210 a short time before the speaker blew, doh!
