Concerns about RBI output into effects return

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have done a tone of searches and learned a lot about this, but there is one question I am having trouble finding answers to...

At practice the other day I decided to run my RBI through the effects return of my GK 1001RB-II, and was completely happy with what I was hearing when bypassing the GKs pre completely. For some reason I just can't get the tones I want out of the 1001RB-II alone without cranking it to unreasonably loud volumes, and the RBI has been working wonders for me. My concern is that when running it this way, I no longer have a clip indicator or anything to let me know if I am driving it too hard. Should I just treat the RBI level output as my new master volume and not worry about it? I rarely crank it up to the 1001RBs full potential volume levels, but some gigs require me to get pretty loud without DI.

If you use the Tuner out to the RBI it bypasses the tone section but still has the input clip indicator. Otherwise yes, just use the RBI as your pre gain as the "Boost" and "Woofer/Tweeter" masters are still after the effects return.

So are you suggesting bass > GK input > tuner out to RBI > RBI to effects return? In that case wouldn't the clip light just reflect the signal of the bass into the GK and not the signal of the RBI into the effects return? I'm just curious as to if there is a limit of how high i can run the output of the RBI into the effects return before it becomes unsafe for the head

The only thing you need to be concerned about blowing the speakers just use your ears to hear when they start farting out. I've never trusted the clip lights on amps for that reason

This is kind of what I was thinking too. I'm using the GK Neo 412, and have NEVER had to get loud enough to where the cab was "farting out", so I will just jam on and not worry!

Thanks guys!

You will know if the signal from the RBI gets too high. The sound will tell you. The "clip" light on the G-K is input only, before the gain control. Thats just how they are built.
