Confused about ohms : would this work?

Mesa 400+ head along with Epifani UL212 Series I cab.

I'm so confused as to what I should consider when coupling a head and a cab together.

Some say the 4 ohms is important because that gives you access to *all* the power.

According to their respective manufacturer's websites, the Mesa head is 500 watts at 2 ohms, whereas the cab is 700 watts at 4 ohms (IIRC).

What say you, wise TB'ers?

The 400+ is a tube head. Your only concern should be connecting to the proper output taps.

A tube head will put out the same power at 4 ohm or 2 ohms so you will get the full 500 watts at 4 ohms.

Now solid state is a different story....

Further explanation: a tube head puts out all of it's power into any speaker load that it can support- BUT if you don't match the load properly (I think there is a switch on the Mesa 400+) you will hurt the Mesa- I mean, you will kill it and it will be an expensive repair. So use the 4 Ohm taps/setting as it appears on the back of the Mesa.

A solid state power stage will put out different power into various loads, and doesn't really care too much about the load it is connected to as long as it is not below the minimum load.

Plug your 4 ohm cab from the 4 ohm output on the back of the amp. You're done.
