Connecting preamp to power amp

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello fellow bassmen (and bassladies to be fair). As my first official post, as compared to my few years of lurking, I have a question for you all. It might be an incredibly simple question but I need to ask, but first I'll give you some backround on my situation.

So I am a guitarist/bassist, playing guitar for 7 years and bass for about 3. I started playing out as a bass player for about a year now. Up to this point I've ran combo amps, Ampeg BA115 mostly, but now I'm borrowing my new guitar players retired bass rig until I get mine purchased.

As it stands now I'm using a rack mount Sansamp preamp to an Ampeg SVT-4 Pro running into an Ampeg Classic 18 cab. Needless to say the rig isn't exaclty cheap, and I want make sure that I dont do anything to harm it.

I've never used an external preamp of any kind so I ask thee, all mighty TalkBass community, lend me your knowledge. Do I use regular patch cables to connect preamp to power amp, or do I use speaker cable to make the connection? Logic tells me a patch cable will suffice, but it is always a nice idea to check before I do something stupid and harm a nice (and expensive) head that isn't mine.

Thanks guys.

Patch cable will do perfectly.

Your logic and Chris K are right. Use a shielded patch cable. Think of it this way: anything in front of the amp (instrument, fx, preamp) uses shielded cable, amp to speaker uses unshielded cable.
