Question Convert a 4 ohm cabinet to an 8 ohm?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an Avatar B410NEO and ordered it as 4ohm, to get all the goodness from my BH500 4 ohm maximum head. I'd originally and practically ~and foolishly!~ thought I would never need more, but... I'd love a B212neo under it!

What can I switch out to convert it to an 8 ohm so I can stack it with another 8 ohm cab? Avatar told me I would have "to change all of the guts and its not worth doing. ...better off selling that cab and buying another in the ohm you want."

But I just wanted to check here in case someone has found a way around this.

In asking this question I have exposed my great ignorance...

That is correct, you won't get 8 ohms from the speakers you have, maybe 16 ohms, but very little power will come from your amp at 16 ohms, and it would not be worth it.

You already know the answer, sell the cab and get an 8 ohm, or use a slave amp to drive the extra speaker cab.

Or buy a 2 ohm head and another 4ohm cab... hmmm.
Ah, the Av 410 is plenty loud on its own.
Thanks mate.

yup, sorry. you need four 8 or 32 ohm speakers to do it. it has now either four 4 or 16 ohm speakers now. i'm not sure if it's really a good idea, but ther are line transformers made for this that you can get from parts express, but speak with an expert first, i think they all top out at like 100 watts, and i'm not sure it's a good idea anyway.

Tossing a 212 under a 410 without first having tried both that combination and a pair of 410s side by side would be just as short-sighted as getting a 4 ohm cab.

The 4 ohm choice wasn't short sighted Bill. I'm a family man who gains no funds from playing bass, with a self-limited bass budget. So I capped myself on purpose.

Saw Jeff Beck a few weeks ago and Rhonda Smith was playing with a (2x) 410 and 212; the review on Avatar's sight of this cab combo was also favourable. Perhaps some day I'll buy Traynor's new 412 and be done with all the bass gear want.

I'm learning from the TB community, I play bass but don't study nor create technology that we use to make our thumping sounds.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Having fun.

The 4ohm avatar 410 uses 16ohm speakers so it cant be done. If you get another 4 ohm 212 and wire the 2cabs in series for an 8ohm total load that would work. I would just try the 410 alone, it might surprise you and be more than you expect. With a good head mine will do any job I have tried it with, with good results.

Yep, it really does-rig suits purpose/set budget very well, added Hartke's VXL to fine tune. boom. We are three guitars, drums and bass. Master at 3 or 4, the bass is easily felt in the mix.

My question was brought on by a temporary case of GearGoofy. I'm thankful for what I've got.
