Convert BA115 Combo to a Cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find my answer through search function. I have the Ampeg BA115, and now want to move up to a Little Mark Head and 2x10 or 4x10 cab. Is there an easy way to use my combo amp as an extension? Is there an easy way to bypass the amp in the combo, or do I need to physically remove it somehow? Any suggestions, warnings, or directions to threads would be appreciated.

You could go to a repair guy(who knows what he's doing) & get him to put in an input jack on the cab somewhere, that would take the BA115 amp section completely out of the circuit, allowing you to use just the cab section as an extension, while retaining the combo's integrity. Voila, & you have a multi purpose unit that can still be used for rehearsal or as an extension cabinet!

+1, the fact you need to ask means it would be best to have a pro do the work. Shouldn't cost much at all, and as cirrusb said, it would then have more than one purpose.

Okay, so no easy do it yourself job (and as you've correctly guessed, I don't know my way around anything electrical). Will start the search for a decent repair guy to modify my combo, thanks.

actually a correct type input jack would do the trick. I've done it on a few guitar combos..

the switch will interrupt the speaker wire when it is plugged into another amp

look for a 1/4 NC type jack

http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=88

it would have to be installed as an extra input jack, I normally mount these on back of amp near the speaker.. just makes it easier..

I will draw up a crappy MS Paint drawing and post it.

Hope this helps... it works great .. I mod alot of combos to do this..

if nothing is plugged into the jack the Combo will work as normal..
as soon as you connect a speaker cable from another amp into the jack it will disconnect the speaker from the combo and allow new amp to power speaker without any harm to combo..

any more questions let me know..

it is up to you to find a location that will work well.. good luck.

That's awesome. thanks for the illustration. What happens if there is a horn too? Also, does anyone know what ohm rating the speaker is in ab Ampeg BA115HP?

the wire should jumper from speaker to horn. so if you cut wires between head and speaker it should include horn as well..

but I haven't looked inside my BA115 to see... I also HATE horns, so I disconnected it...

I'll trade you a fearful 15 or 12/6/1 for it if the head still works that would make a nice little practice amp to leave at my drummers house LOL.
