Converting an Ashdown combo into a cab for use with another head

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone has converted a combo into a cab before? I own an Ashdown MAG300 4x10 combo and recently purchased an Ashdown ABM900EVO2 head. My thought is to:
1. extract the head unit from the combo and make it into a standalone head (as a back-up)
2. cut the then extra top section off
3. re-cover the cab to get rid of the fur
4. insert a backplate with speak-on socket.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I had an ABM300 combo, and removed the head. I had a new case made for the head, cause I still used it. I just didn't want to carry the whole weight of the combo...

That being said, I would not do what you're suggesting... I'd sell the MAG combo and buy an ABM cabinet. It would be a better match, and it would not kill the resale value of the MAG.

I hear you. Probably would be a better idea and a lot less effort!

+1 don't kill the resale.

If you don't sell it you'll have a good back up amp.

Another option is to route the speaker wires out the back, cut the wires and simply reconnect them through male & female speaker jacks. That way you could still use the combo, or just use it as a cab like you want. I've done this to a couple of my combos without drilling any holes, so the mod was fully reversible.

I would not butcher what you already have. Sell the combo and put the money towards a decent cabinet. The speaker area in a combo is typically a compromise so a real speaker box is where you should look.

Thanks a lot folks.
Decided to get rid of it and go for a ABM610 instead.
In the mean time I can connect my new head to the cab of the combo through the jack.
