Converting Goliath Cabs to Speakon

Sign in to disble this ad
I have decided to convert my Goliath III cabs to speakon and totally remove and convert the 2) 1/4" jacks and disconnect the banana terminals. Unless someone here advises otherwise that I need the 4 pole, the 2 pole connectors are what I am planning on buying, but should I get the Speakon-1/4" combo jacks or just keep a few adapters in my kit?

Any dissenting opinions?

I believe you can insert a 2-pole plug in a 4-pole jack but not vice versa. Assuming that's true, I'd stick with 4-pole jacks (on the cabinet) in case you have to use a speaker cable with a 4-pole plug some time.

Combo jacks seem like a good idea too...

.
+1. The combo jacks are OK but are made for PC board mounting, so they're not easy to connect wires to.

So which is the best jack to get? Parts-Express has a few with what appears to be the same rear connections for the standard and the combo. Could it be a generic pic? Which of the following is best for my application? The last listed is the screw-on connectors...I'm so confused...

Neutrik NL4MP Speakon 4 Pole Panel Mount

Neutrik NL4MP-UC Speakon 4 Pole Panel Mount

Neutrik NL4MP-ST Speakon 4 Pole Panel Mount

I converted my head and two cabs to Speakon and as I prefer soldered joints to screw terminals I chose Neutriks like the first two. Driver positive to 1plus, driver negative to 1minus. What you might also consider is keeping the existing 1/4" jacks and simply adding (and paralleling up) the Speakons.

I don't think any of those are combo jacks... The only difference is the wiring terminals...smaller quick-connects on the first one, 1/4 in. q-cs on the "UC" and screw terminals on the "ST".

4 pole.

When I did my 810e conversion 15? years ago there was only 4 pole. And man where they expensive! I spent about $30 for the cab jack alone, and was laughed at for doing it.

In hind sight, maybe the laughter was about what they charged me.
