Could This Amp Cut It?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a concert on Saturday with my school's jazz band. However, it's our first weekend show. We want to absolutely minimize the need for a stop at school on that day. The school's amp is a Crate that is quite loud (We keep the volume at about 1/2 most of the time). It's an 80-watt keyoard combo, yet it can cut through 4 saxes, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets, a guitarist, and a pretty loud drummer. The only downside is weight. It weighs 60 lbs, and we use a small dolly for moving it. So to cut down on the need for a dolly, I was hoping I could pack my 120W Hartke Kickack 12. It's 18 lbs. lighter. However I want to be sure it can work in this setting. We're playing at the local elementary school. I believe it's outdoors, but I'm not sure. So hypothetically, would my Hartke work in this context, or would I need to bring in the big amp?

I would say yes. If it doesn't then the drummer needs to chill out.

I've not found that my Kickback 12 will keep up with a "pretty loud drummer".

Think it could keep up with keys, 4 trumnpets, 4 saxes, and 4 trombones at the same time?

Why take a chance? Suck it up and bring the Crate.

Yeah, I think you'll be safe. You might find that it could cut a little more but it should do the job. But the 60 pounds isn't to bad if you account for the assurance your getting of knowing you'll perform great

Look at it this way- you KNOW the Crate will cut it, so why risk blowing the gig and possibly having everybody mad at you? Not worth the risk.
Try the Hartke when there's no risk. Maybe bring it to school and try it during rehearsal?

+1 I carry a head that is 20lbs heavier than that and I'm no spring chicken. Better to carry a little extra weight and be shure than save a bit of weight and not find out till its too late you should have brought the other amp. Just get someone to help you lift it if its a problem.

i don't see why his hartke kickback wouldn't work when the crate keyboard amp does with 40 less watts. the kickback isn't exactly the loudest amp ever made but certainly it would perform in the ballpark with the crate.

Have you ever cranked your Hartke before? Just try it for comparison

60 pounds? None of my gigging cabs weighs under 95 pounds ... well the Glock might be 80 ... but I'm over 60! And some of my amps weigh another 50 pounds. Quit whining.
