Craigs List Score- SVT Straight Back

Ampeg straight back SVT cab. All original, but one ripped cone. Yes, someone painted the sides red. $200 from Craigslist. Tomorrow I'm getting a replacement Legend B810, and a handcart.

lol @ handcart.

Try to find some cheap tolex or some light paint stripper.

not trying to talk you out of the b810 since it looks like a great speaker, but the speakers in the straightback cabs are the holy grail of svt speakers. i'd get the ripped speaker reconed. with shipping it will cost a little more than the b810 probably, but well worth it. if they were all trashed maybe i'd say use the b810's, but with just one ripped, reconing is a no-brainer.

www.orangecountyspeaker.com is supposed to be the place to send recones. never used them but everyone says they're the best.

Thanks for the link Jimmy. I'm definitely sending the driver out for reconing, but have gigs this weekend. The Legend will get me by and serve as backup when the CTS comes back. Cab will also be re-Tolexed this summer....if I ever get a weekend off!!!

I love old 810s. nothing like a cab that was designed to make people poop themselves with 2.3 tube watts of power.

Yeah gee look at that weird grain in the OSB.... Wonder where they found that stuff?

Funny it only took them about 40 years to start making them that way again.

i got my 71 ampeg for $230, with a much smaller tear in one of the speakers. sent it out to bruce at fliptops, currently awaiting its arrival (this week i hope). great, great cabinet.

I’m looking to put a date on this cab. The drivers date to early ’71. Is it safe to assume the cab is a ’71, or did they inventory drivers?

BTW: The Legend B810 seems to be a real good match. At some point will definitely get the original CTS repaired and returned to the cab.

Nice find! Boy, looking at it with the grill off makes you wonder what all the fuss is about over these.....until you hear it with the matching all tube head!

Heck, back in the day we used to repair those speakers with thick card stock, a razor blade, and a can of hair spray, just to get through the next gig. Dragged them 20 miles through the snow without a cart too.

I remember reading someplace that straight-backed SVT cabs stopped in 1970 but I'm probably wrong. Every one I've seen was called a '69.

I had an SWR combo with Eminence speakers that were reconed by Orange County Speaker Repair, and the patch job was flawless.

Straight back cabs....I wonder why Ampeg changed design on these? Just to make them heavier?

Mine dates to late 72 and I was told it was a 72, but a friend who has a 72 dated SVT has speakers in the cab dated to 71. Can't be sure they didn't stockpile speakers, but I'd say the safe bet is on that being at 71.

Congrats on the cab, they're great, especially with those CTS speakers. Good to hear the legend B810.

lol, no, to make them easier to move. and i will agree that the towel bar cabs are a lot easier to move, but i don't care...for tone like that, i'll deal with it.

Nice, dude. Very nice.

Retolex if you want, and aren't in a metal band. I kinda like the look of beat up tolex cabs.
