Crate amp static noise issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Out of the blue, my old Crate BT50 started producing a static noise while notes decay. The connection between my basses and the amp are secure. It does this with both my basses and all my cables. I have zero expertise past those possible solutions. Can anyone give me a hand?

Interesting problem.

Are the notes clear until they begin to decay?

If you play the amp at a very low volume, do you always get the static, i.e even before notes begin to decay?

Did this start happening after the amp was transported or maybe knocked over? Or has the amp stayed in place the whole time?

Notes sound fine until they decay, and I can only hear static as they do so. I've been noodling around for the past hour, and once in a while it seems to go away for a moment or two only to come right back.

And no, I haven't moved since I deep cleaned the room a few weeks ago.

Pull the speaker to see if the wires from the amp are resting on the top of the cone (long shot I admit). Check that the spade lugs have a good grip on the speaker terminals. If they do, then that's not the problem, so pull them off and put the speaker aside. Pull the head out of the cab and poke around inside. (Power off, AC cable unplugged.) Make sure everything's still tight. Find every removable cable, connector, etc., and reseat each one several times to get rid of any oxidation. Check the screws that hold the circuits board(s) to the chassis because oftentimes they're used to establish earth ground so if one comes loose you can get static-y problems like this. Check anything else that might come loose from vibration. In my experience, vibration is the most common combo-killer because it tends to cause screws to back out, circuit board traces to crack, solder joints to pop, etc.

That's where I'd start.

Well, here's what happened. I tried taking this thing apart, realized that I can't slide the amp out of the cabinet because the built in tuner is in the way with no obvious way of removing that first, tried for the better part of an hour to find a way to do this without taking the whole cabinet apart, gave up, and put what I had taken apart back together. Now the problem seems to be gone. I never even touched any of the connections, but I guess I shouldn't complain.

Thanks for the advice.
