I'm using two Crazy8s as the mains in my home studio PA system run off a Mackie powered mixer. They sound fantastic. But I also use a separate powered subwoofer, a Polk Audio DSW Pro400. I think it's an eight inch driver. You can tell the difference with and without the subwoofer.

And they had to tell me to turn down again (acoustic band).
In 2 weeks I have an outside gig - so we will see how it does there.
Pics coming soon. thanks B.A.D. |

I've spent at least 4 hours now tonight scouring the web about these and even more about fEARful that I didn't already know. I was set to pull the trigger on something completely different but the Crazies have made me re-think everything!
Special thanks to Jazzdogg for offline conversation about his experiences and buying my AI F2 S3...which I'm starting to regret already! |

My 600 would be a fat guy riding a pony for sure. | Set those 88's on the ground and crossfire em!

I am using a Shuttle 6.2, right now, and it gets me where I want to be from a tone perspective, but would prefer something that is 400 watts or less. Wasn't really pleased with my Shuttle 3.0 through this cab.
Still lovin' my composite 88. It's getting most of my playing time, right now.

Yes, my friend came over this weekend with a bunch of stuff.
And we hooked his Tone Hammer 500 to my 88. It sounded good, but with the drive up a bit - it started to sound middy.
But I prefer the TC amps with it better.
The Tone Hammer had the power and all required to do the job. He liked the tone, but prefers the amp with his thunder child 15.
So different tones for different folks.
The Hammer would be a good choice for the 88, but just not for me. I want to try the EA Micro with the 88 next.

Lenny | I have an EA Micro and it sounds great with my C88s. Same goes for my Acoustic Image Clarus.

I appreciate your input. In addition to the 6.2, I have used and gigged a Markbass F1, GB Shuttle 3.0 and a GB Streamliner 600. The 6.2 has turned out to be my "go to" amp for the gigs I do with the 88. I guess that what I am really looking for is a Shuttle 3.2, but GB doesn't make one :-(.
Unfortunately, one of the regular gigs I do, will be changing up to a church sanctuary that seats about 500 and I won't have PA support. I played this room once with the 88 / Shuttle 6.2 and really had to push it to keep up. I could use my Thunderchild TC115 but it's a pretty awkward carry-in. If I was 20 years younger it wouldn't be an issue.
Love the 88, just want to be able to push it without worrying about damaging it.
Thanks again! Quote:

Check into the fdeck HPF-3. Really allows those cabs to shine.

First I'll say Lenny can put together a well built, great sounding cab himself. That's how we met.
The TH, IMO, will sound like a TH through the 88. If you like the sound of the TH you will like it. There is some good info in the TH500 thread. Just recently someone posted some frequency charts. Turning up the drive cuts lows and highs and when really cranked there is a high mid peak.
I also think the TH sounds like a TH through the thunderchild. I think the Thunderchild and the 88 have more in common than different. Both pretty much produce what goes into them. The TC gets louder and wider. The thing that's neat about the Thunderchild is the way you can take a 500 watt head and crank it, hit a low B and it doesn't fart out. It's really just not natural. Honestly I don't think I ever need to do that but it is cool.
Lenny's TC amps sounded completely different than the TH. Better or worse would depend on the player and the gig.
For comparison, the Ampeg cabs sounded great but they imparted their own character to whatever went into them. The 88 and the Thunderchild did that to a much lesser degree.
Right now I'm digging the TH and the ampegs. But the other cabs can do more variety. I think a pair of 88's stacked vertically would handle moderate rock gigs. Lenny didn't seem to think so but my advice to him was that since he's so pleased with the 88 try two. But now he's got his eye on my Thunderchild.
We briefly piddled with his Fdeck series 2. While it did tighten things up I didn't notice it as a sonic panacea. It actually made the cabs sound more like the ampegs or the Thunderchild with the ports plugged.
The Barry Audio 88 is a great sounding, great looking cab.
For kicks we put an AV on top of the GK. This was a surprisingly nice sounding, although strange looking rig. |
