Crown XLS 402D

Ok, so I'm purchasing a preamp and I saw this as a reasonable priced power amp. Does anyone have experience with the Crown XLS 402D not the 402? I figure at 8ohms bridged it would put out 600W which is enough for me and if I want I can run it at 4ohms if I get a 4ohm cab. Will I need a Y cable to hook this up to the pre?

You should first determine the output voltage of the pre, and find a poweramp that will run optimally with that given output. Not all preamps are created equal, and nor are all poweramps.

My XLS402 has incredibly noisy fans. Its fine for gigs, but recording or practicing is a pain.

This type of set up would be used live most likely and just DI'd for recordings...can't the fan just be replaced? http://www.svc.com/
Carvin 1000DCML a better choice?

402d is rated @ 900 watts @ 8 ohms bridged, FWIW.

http://www.crownaudio.com/amp_htm/xls.htm

it is nothing special, but it runs cool and puts out the power, and isnt terribly heavy. no processing or peak-limiting, the latter of which could make it dangerous as an instrument amp. i dont find the fan noise to be any worse than the average forced-air-cooled power amp. we actually have a few of the xls amps in the PA, and so far they have performed flawlessly and reliably, while producing good power. my biggest beef with them is that they arent rated to be bridged @ 4 ohms. musicians friend says you can, but crown doesnt list specs for that type of operation. sure would like to run a couple of them mono into the subs... in fact, that probably means the next upgrade for the system will likely necessitate ditching these amps for something else. but jeez, at the cut-rate prices they are going for now, they will be hard to beat, value-wise. $200 shipped for the 402d. however, for anything but an instrument amp, i would recommend the extra $100 for the 802d. 800/2 into 4 ohms, and i promise it will do every bit of that!
