Custom cab build idea - Bass/PA type cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I was considering doing a mod on my Avatar SB112 cab to the xover and horn, but realized I could just save that money, sell the cab, and get a new cab for about the same... So I'm thinking about what to order next from Don @ LDS.

I've got bass covered for "loud" and "small" gigs, and want something more for small-medium type gigs. Here's the kicker, I plan to sometimes run a mic into a mixer, into my GB shuttle using it as poweramp. This isn't for covering vocals at shows really, it's more like for talking to the crowd in-between instrumental sets, like jazz and other instrumental music mostly, or using a mic for the brass instruments or something...

Also I'll use this setup for general audio playback in my apartment, karaoke with my friends, whatever.

And... I plan to add an identical cab in the future, when I get the money, and have 2 quality PA mains...

My idea is 3012HO with a horn crossed over low, somewhere like 1.2khz - 1.6khz. I'm basically asking for horn suggestions, and where/how to crossover... or any other design parameters...

Is this good?

Specifications: *Power rating: 80 watts (EIA426B specification, 1.6 kHz @ 18 dB) *VCdia: 2" *Impedance: 8 ohms *Usable frequency range: 1,200-20,000 Hz *Recommended crossover: 1.2 kHz/18 dB or 1.8 kHz/12 dB

I'm also thinking about using the JBL 90x90 waveguide in the wiki fearful, because sometimes it will be on the floor and I want that vertical dispersion (which those big wide horns don't seem to be great for)...

Then I could ask for a passive xover with switchable bypass, in case I want to use my rack.

rpsands already gave me some good advice, I'm just looking for more input... Ideas? Thanks!

One thing to note is if you use them as PA mains you'll do a lot better with some 3015LF or 3012LF subs and a crossover, than screwing with using them as standalone mains.

Some serious issues exist with using mains on poles as your primary LF source (e.g. mic'd kick drum).

When you're looking at horns, make sure they're big enough to load that low. I'd also get a couple of L-pads, may need to turn them down a little for playing cd's through. And yes, when you get the second one done, you may want to look into a small sub system if you mic drums or run your bass through the PA. The subs won't be neccesary if you're only micing vocals, horns, guitar combo's etc. Pretty much anything other than bass/kick/or the bottom octave or two from keys.

So because of the issue of LF thru the mains, should I just go with Deltalite-II 2512s? If I'm not gonna be running LF thru them anyways...

Is that horn I linked an example of a horn that can go low enough? Its freq response is 1.2k - 20k
Say with something like this, "minimum freq 1.5k"
