Had two SVT's in my past, real all tube SVT's and they are no longer my thing.
There are a WIDE range of choices for tone shaping amps. SVTs old and new don't HAVE to sound one way. I find G-K more versitile but other amp makers may provide even more shaping range. Genz-Benz, Carvin, many others.
All tube SVT and some flavor of 810 (many different voicing there as well) are an old standard for good reason, we grew up with that sound. Does not mean it is the end all answer.
I found bringing my 412 was unrealistic for many venues here. That is why I also have a 212 now.

An 810 doesn't take up much in the way of floor space so, meh, no loss. I also find larger cabs easier to move around than smaller, side handled cabs.

I honestly dont like the process of choosing gear because too many choices and being newb I dont know what to look for (basics).
Possible gigs in the future when I can play would be small jam rooms, small bars, bigger bars, patios, ocassional various private parties. Large halls, fests, big nightclubs and such... who knows.
What are the specs to look for in a bass amp and, are they like guitar and each amp has its own personality?
Size and lugging experience is important for me. Wondering if may need 2 amps? One for easy quick get up and go small room jam, and another amp for power with band, larger place. I have seen bass players with speaker and some type of bass sound racks on top. I guess those are the fancy pants set ups?
Music I would like to play: all kinds. But, i know I will look for whatever gigs related to: latin, funk, non difficult jazz standards, and weird stuff like Radiohead, and even avant garde stuff where wide eq range helps (though i assume most eq will be dicatated by the bass?---i dont wanna over mess with that)
Thankkkksss
Happy almost new year!

If you need to reach 810 volume levels (doubtful) then I still say get a pair of 410s. Then at least you'll be able to spare the weight and space on most gigs by just bringing one of them.

| | | Thanks Scott! I have no idea what type of gig requires 810? Im not even close to any gigs! I hate super heavy gear that makes gigging miserable back breaking.
Why 2x 410? Why not just one?
Additionally, I also think I need a small cab for quieter jams..... |

| | | ahhhh, i understand, gotcha, lol.
Hey only one guy in this thread mentioned the Mark amps, not that popular....?. Seems mostly a choice between GK, Ampeg and Carvin.....
BTW, some heads have a full EQ in addition to the regular amp knobs.....is that EQ gear-head overkill? Or is it super useful in the world of bass? All I know is, the more things gear can do, the more time I spend tweaking and learning the gear and less playing.... |

What is your musical goal for this year? What do you think you will doing on New Years Eve 2013?

Which brand is versatile in sound? | I'm getting a variety from my Markbass rig (LMIII + 151P cab(s), unless it's just in my fingers and how I play.
