Dating Fender Speakers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello. I bought a vintage Fender 15" speaker. Its got a square magnet and a blue and silver sticker on it. There are also some numbers on the frame they are... 12-6383 and 1377246N.

Oh yeah. What wire goes on what input. There are black and white wires.

Fender speakers are notoriously traditional and old-fashioned. When dating them, the key is to: "go slow".

So don't be in too much of a hurry to score. Compliment your Fender speakers on their appearance. Take some time to get acquainted with their family. For the first date, agree to go with a chaperone. And be prepared to settle for a handshake instead of a kiss.

In the long run, it'll be worth it...

John. This speaker should be 8 ohms yes? I only have the one right now. I filled the hole with a piece of wood so I do not have a 15 inch port in it right now.

yes, it probably is an 8 ohm speaker, but you could always measure its dc resistance with a volt/ohm meter. if it measures anywhere from 5.6 to 6.8 ohms dc, then it is has an8 ohm impedance.

But go gentle with it, because they ain't powerhouse speakers. Hook a modern amp on it and you'll invert the cone... Great if you're madonna, but not an old crusty speaker.

That unit needs a mate and a nice 68-75 Bassman or super showman cab. Good luck finding that. I sure built enough of them when I was a kid though.

Have you got any pics of Madonna wearing a pair of inverted speaker cones, Bob? And does she wear 10s or 12s?

I'd like to see that...

I'd be on the safe side and say no more than 50. Even then, DO NOT BOOST THE LOW BASS!

Does it have a silver dust cap?

It really wouldn't matter. The cabs are fairly close and NOT tuned for much of anything. BOB
