DB750 - Making it Grittyer, More SVT Like

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently aquired the DB750 (shown in my avatar). Love it. I had a vintage Telefunken 12ax7 I put in V1. In V2 I have a JJ 12AX7.

It's now abit to hi-fi for my taste. This tube combination really brings out the mid range even more in the DB750. I'm playing through an AE410.

Question is. What tube combination will get me back to a vintage SVTish tone. I.e. warmer, grittyer, and more open tone.

Thanks!

I tried various NOS tubes in it, including 5751's, but I couldn't get an overdriven grit that sounded good to me. For touch-sensitive grit I've had success with a combo of just a touch of overdrive pedal + gain up/master down in the amp's pre.

Edit: I'm currently using Westinghouse NOS 12ax7s in V1 & V2. Not as wooly/undefined as the stock sovteks, but not as hifi as other options.

Cant help ya with the tubes but I think you just need a VT pedal. I own a couple older SVT's and have have pretty good luck getting the tone using this pedal with several other brands of amps.
