Can a dbx 160XT compressor be used with a Hartke LH500?

Connected the cable to the effect send jack from the LH500 to the Input of the dbx 160xt and the out from the dbx 160xt to the effects return jack on the LH500. Nothing. Connections correct or could there be a problem with the dbx or effects input/output of the LH500?

How about bass signal into input of dbx. Then output of dbx into input of the amp. Does that work?

Hi JMG,

Sounds like there is some sort of connection problem - most probably the DBX since there's nothing from it straight into your amp...

The best way to run rack compressors is through the effects loop, as previously suggested, but if your dbx doesn't even work in front of the amp, best to get another compressor.

I like pedal compressors more than rack ones, mostly because you can tweak your compression without altering any tone from your amp - more versatile, more straight-to-the-point.
The best pedal I have used is the DOD Milk-Box - incredible. Smoothens everything out beautifully, or keeps your bass sound natural, without any squish - an exceptional compressor.
I used rack gear for a while, but realised that compression tweaking meant changes to the eq, changing output level, changing this, that, etc...Pedals let you compress everything before letting your amp have the final say in your tone.

Hope this helps! All the best,

JOHN.

Coupla' other things...

Jacks clean?
Bypass button?
Sorry, just wanted to make sure.
Good news is it's fixable. I think the XT model (as opposed to the 160A, which is nearly the same circuit) has mostly discrete components and socket-mounted chips, not the surface mount type, which require special tools for soldering and de-soldering. At least that's what I've heard, and it's why I got the 160XT instead of the 160A. So a competent tech should be able to locate the problem, at least, and make a repair with a minimum of effort.
