DBX__ - what does it really do for you?

For those of us who do not have an opportunity to sample one these, what does the dbx compressor (whichever model) do for your sound/tone?

Secondly, how would you incorporate this into a set up with a passive bass, VT Bass, and 4 PRO? I see a lot of discussion about "line level" and using the FX loops.

I'm not using a computer with this set up. FWIW, I don't plan on pulling the trigger blindly; just want to hear some opinions out there. Something smoother that won't cut out or reduce the signal. I'm thinking "Flea meets Fran Sheehan who both go to tea at Steve Harris' house."

They does the same thing as any compressor. Basically they even out the sound so everything comes out about the same volume.

With the setup you mention, I'd stick a rack compressor in the effects loop. If you went with a pedal compressor, I'd probably put it in front on the VT Bass...but that's personal preference.

DBX makes many different models. Some good, some bad. Some are simple and some are complicated with all sorts of knobs and meters.

It will in the best of cases allow louder levels "apparently" by evening out your peaks. At worst they are crutches for folks with uneven touch. They can remove from your audio your use of dynamics.
I find them more useful in studio on whole mixes.

I used to run an original DBX 166 through the Efx Loop on my Eden Navigator, even though the navigator had compression, I experimented just about every different way hooking it up and guess I should have kept notes because I can't remember which I enjoyed the most.

you can pick them up on ebay used for 100 bucks they're just so musical as far as bass is concerned, I loved them on the Bass inserted at FOH. Smokin! I have gone digital at FOH and have yet to sell mine I cherish them so much!
