Dealing with rat fuzz/what to do with mesa 2x15/did I get a deal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, in the spirit of consolidation, I've decided to put three threads in one.

First off, how does one deal with nasty rat fuzz on a cab? Just acquired one used and it needs to be cleaned up. I'm thinking a vacuum and scissor job.

Second, now I have a Mesa Boogie Diesel 2x15 to deal with. I don't think I want to sell it because it's truly epic but it's way to heavy to travel and I plan on starting to gig with a bar band soon. I don't have the room in my car anyway. Can I cut it in half? If I were to sell, what would I get? (Please, no solicitations in this thread because I don't have a supporting membership as of now so hold off until I upgrade.)

Third, did I get a good deal on this pre-Fender SWR Triad? I paid $215 with tax. It was priced at $199 and there was a 4x10 and a Sunn tube head with it all with custom red grills. If I had stayed any longer I would have walked out with too much cab (yet again).

Thanks all!

1- sciSSors and vacuum will do nicely. 2- don't cut it in half, just park it somewhere, and enjoy. I traded my Deisel 215 for a 115 for the same reasons, (approx $400 for the 215), and 3- I have no ideA.

You can get one of those fabric shavers for the fuzz. They are sold for sweaters and other fabrics.

Amazon.com: fabric shaver

Is this it? how much should I spend to take on this dirty rat fuzz?

I suppose I will keep the Diesel. It's just so awesome. One day when I'm older I guess I'll want it for a rig of doom.

Probably one of those cheap ~$10 ones should be sufficient.

The fabric shaver or a beard trimmer will work on the fuzz.

maybe I will use an old high power trimmer have that nobody uses. Lots of chunks. Needs a vacuum too.

Finally got some more playing time on this since it's no longer after everyone's bedtime. This cab seems to match my Eden WT300 perfectly! I now have more volume range than 1-3. Strangely the head would clip on the 2x15 at 3-4. Wouldn't it make more sense that I'd be able to turn it up all the way and not max out the 800 watt Diesel inch speakercab?

Considering doing the tweeter swap out for a 5 inch speaker. Any experience with this one?

Very Very carefully apply a propane torch, from a distance. This will burn off the excess nap, and give the covering a nice tightlook/feel. But only after you have trimmed all the loose stuff that you can..test the procedure on the back, so your first attempts aren't too obvious..And please don't set anything on fire!!!...

1. Sell the Mesa cab as is. If you fool with it, you will reduce its resale value.

2. "Wouldn't it make more sense that I'd be able to turn it up all the way and not max out the 800 watt Diesel"

Not necessarily. It all depends on the cab design, whether it has original drivers, and where your EQ and volume are set.

3. "Considering doing the tweeter swap out for a 5 inch speaker. Any experience with this one?"

You'd have to change the crossover and create a sealed compartment for the 5, which sounds like way too much work. And too many chances for failure.

I'm considering keeping the Diesel. I don't see any reason to sell it, I'm not in dire straits for cash right now and it's so freaking epic. I was probably going to have my electrical engineer friend help me with the speaker mod but on the other hand I was just slappin da bass mon in the basement and it just sounds lovely. I'm so happy I drove out to guitar center to grab this!

Thanks for all the advice on the fuzz. I think I'm going to shave it up, hit it with scissors and then blowtorch it. That's a fantastic idea to be honest. Wish it was the same kind of fuzz as my yorkville practice amp, nice hair on that blue beauty.

If he isn't a speaker cabinet design expert, don't bother. That's like asking a psychiatrist to do surgery just because he's an MD.

1. Good ideas already for dealing with fuzz. You can trim it, vacuum it, then scrub in some "Tuff Stuff" or any other product you'd use for cleaning car interiors, let that dry, then vacuum it again. Point is to loosen up and suck as much grime as you can before you seal it in with the torch. Those kind of cleaning products will kill any funky smells it might have too.

2. Don't cut it up, it won't be worth any $ then. If you want it as two separate 115's build clones, or just buy a pair of 115's. Don't know about yours but a lot of older Mesa's were a take on an EV design and used 15L's. Shouldn't be lacking any mids or old school paper cone topend there. The mid driver thing should use different, more low frequency oriented woofers. Again leave it as is. You can disconnect the tweeter and filter if you want and leave the 15's wired straight up to the jack if you like it better that way. Save the filter and leave the tweeter mounted in there to plug the hole so you don't mess up the cab tuning. Again to keep it original or be able to return it to original. It's normal for your amp controls to work as you described for a few reasons, one of which is the drivers and cab design. It'll get loud but you can still fart it out with a bunch of power and/or bass boost.

3. If everything on it works like it's supposed to it's a good deal. The Triad isn't the best of 3way designs but still a good ways ahead of the other "one type of speaker plays it all" sort of bass cabs.
