Decent sealed cabs????

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

Just wondering what some of you guys experience is with some sealed cabs... Currently, I have an Epi 410 thats ported... I've had an Eden 410xlt that was ported....i just cant seem to get 'my' sound out of a ported cab, so i was wondering what are some decent sealed cabs that DO NOT BREAK THE BANK...

My old rig (hence my nic) was an Ampeg SVT II Pro and a 76' 810 that was refinished and refurbished by Steve Azola. Not sure of the specs, but man, it sounded good... The II pro could make it fart some when pushed hard, but for the most part, that ampeg rig is 'my' sound....

Now, fast forward 13 years, and the ampeg gear is just simply not affordable for me. I already sold my Epi PS600 locally, and it looks like there are some deals brewing for my cab. Im looking at spending the $$ on a used GBE 1200 and that will leave me less than $400 to spend on a cab. I would love a Berg nv412, but alas......

So, anyways, what are some decent sealed cabs that dont cost a fortune on the used market? 10s or 12s are both good for me. Ive got a line on a used Peavey 412 TVX, but its ported and im not sure if I can dial in that tight sound i like on it.

Suggestions?

Thanks
Randy

Carvin's got them on sale now for a song too. $299.00 for a BR410. 4 or 8 ohm, your pick.
Best 410 out there? No, but a decent cab at a great price. Get the 4 ohm version.

I'm thinking you'll need around 3 dB (2x) more power from the amp to drive a 4x10 sealed cab to the same SPL of a ported one, plus or minus a bit depending on the speakers.

SWR and Hartke also make sealed 4x10s.

Just keep your eyes on craigslist for a used Ampeg fridge to come up.

well, if i wind up with the Genz Benz GBE 1200, a lack of watts should not be an issue.

Well, an 8x10 is just not feasible due to portability reasons. UT won't fit in my car.

Look at Low Down Sound. He built me a sealed 610 that I just adore! Haven't used another cab in over a year. Very reasonably priced too.

20 years playing every amp & cab combination from every company under the sun & some underground boutique brands. Now I'm back where I belong, Ampeg SVT4 Pro & 810E Cab. I cant believe how good the 810E sounds with every bass I play it just dosn't get any better than this.

I'll say. That's like 1.6 horsepower.

I'd still try to get an NV. Sell some stuff on ebay, get a loan, whatever. If there's something that I have learned about gear, it's "buy once, cry once".

Absoloutely, and a Berg may be in my future. But i need something that makes some noise RIGHT NOW. I dont have an extra $1k sitting around that i can throw at a berg...I dont even have half that.. The question was DECENT sealed cabs...not the BEST sealed cabs...
And that being said, the only real reply is seems to be Carvin...Any others? Not one other manufacturer makes a sealed cab?
How about just a list of sealed cabs that you guys know exist?I seem to be able to only find ported ones...

Thanks
Randy

While it is still a ported cab, the Berg HS410 is very warm, tight and low mid punchy, and is in the tone universe of a classic sealed multi10 cab. Much smaller than the very nice NV610, and smaller and thinner (although heavier) than your current 410UL, and MUCH warmer, punchier, tighter.

You might also check out the new Marcus Miller Golite 410.. sealed, and 55 pounds... so tight and mid punchy.

Isn't the Ampeg SVT410HE sealed. Probably $300-$350 used.

You might like a pair of the Ampeg 210AV's.
Light, sealed, true ampeg tone, and two of them get pretty loud.

Sealed sound = gentle rolloff down low. I'd suggest trying out something like FDeck's 12db/octave variable high pass, or something along those lines.

Generally speaking, there aren't a lot of woofers out there that are of a quality with the modern stuff (Kappalites, deltalites etc) that have the proper specs for good sealed performance. Since that's the case, it makes a lot of sense to simulate sealed cabinets with tone shaping, which is relatively easy to do.

I use an old V4 4x12 guitar cab that I loaded with Eminence Neodymium S2012 Basslites. I can tell you that this cabinet now sounds absolutely fantastic with any amp I use. It actually gives a very fridge-like vibe.
