Deciding between 2 x 15 or 6 x 10 ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a bit of research here, but i wanted to get some current input from owners.........

I am having a tuff time deciding between a 2 15 cab and a 6 10 cab.......then I saw a 4 12 that peaked my interest.

This will be for live performances..I was using a 2 x 12 previously and it was not cutting it for me...It wasn't "deep" and "boomy" enough for me...not enough low bottom..........so, what you'all think?

Are you considering any specific models? There are lots of 2x15 cabs and also quite a few 6x10 cabs.

IMHO, 2-15 given your sonic desires.

+1 on the 215 cab. I have the Fender 215 Pro which costs as much as the Ampeg 610HLF or 810E but it is a
good stand-alone cab..

i'm using the Orange Terror bass with an warwick wca 611pro.
one hell of a rig!!
decent basses and decent mids!
since the Terror bass itself doesnt have a lot of highs I would prefer the 6x10.
I'm not a slapper, but it has a chunky rocksound with just the right little amount of crispyness for me.
Both a 2x15 or a 6x10 will be very loud!!

Don't forget that Peavey just released their VB215 loaded with Black Widows. One would think it is either the same or better than their old 215 cab, and that thing was a beast and very highly respected here on TB.

There is a 215 mesa road ready in the used section of Guitar Center for $250. It is a freaking awesome cab and a great price!

I haven't tried that particular cab, but I have played the older mesa diesel 215 (which I think are the same as the road ready) and it kills.

I use an SWR 215 & 610. They sound amazing together but if I am only able to bring one I use the 610. The 215 would be a great stand alone for Blues or anything that doesn't need "snappy" or maybe "immediacy" in the attack is a better way to say it. The 610 cuts through better on a loud state too.

The Ampeg 610 to my ears is not a very deep cabinet (I actually think the 410HLF sounds deeper than the 610)

I play through 2x15's myself...

I guess you just have to test what you like!
6x10 or 2x15!
both have their advantages and disadvantages
and both will be pretty loud with your amp.

I love my Ampeg b25-b 2x15!! It's served me VERY well over the years.

However, i'm itching for a decent 6x10 at the moment! I have an old Acoustic 6x10, but 2 of the speakers are blown and one of the 4 working ones is missing its dust cover... i've been debating on weater or not to just get another 6x10 or salvage the one i have...

The tone of a particular speaker size is usually dependent upon how the cabinet is tuned.
Some 2X15" are big and deep and some have accentuated mids with lacking lows (same goes for 6X10"s).

+1

I'm a fan based solely on the size. an 8x10 is too bulky to fit in my car. But most 2x15s and 6x10s fit fine.

I wish i could find one of those Traynor 8x10s!!!

I just bought a used SVT 810 after many many years of avoiding them. I've owned countless higher end enclosures (212's, 410's, 215's, 210 + 115's) and have to say that this 810 definitely sounds the biggest. Not necessarily the loudest (Mesa 215 takes that) or with the most low end but it does just sound BIG and create a real visceral experience. I am not necessarily any louder but I can actually feel what I'm playing.
It is also an enormous cab.

Lightbulb

get yourself one of these 215D cabs, you will be glad you did. I had another older peavey 215 cab w/ black widows and it sounded like a bass cab. this one sounds like molten magic. silky smooth with chocolaty bottom and surprisingly sparkly highs.

Its the one in the foreground. you can barely make out 2 long, rectangular ports along the right side.
