Decisions, decisions - Aggie vs Ampeg

Sign in to disble this ad
Narrowed my search down to these two now.

First impressions - the DB751 is really quiet, you hardly know it's on. The SVT VR is noisier, but not bad at all, though on this one there is a bit of a high-pitched hum, not sure what it is.
Ampeg is quite a bit bigger, bulkier and heavier. I find the DB751 really easy to manage, but the SVT is definitely a handful.
Only played through them a tiny bit so far but immediately the SVT sounds "nicer" to me, it's kind of softer-sounding, less harsh and sharp - plenty of fiddling to do yet though.
It's nice having the 2 inputs on the SVT - I have a P Bass and a Spector, and they don't like being plugged into an amp with the same settings - what works for one doesn't work for the other. Obviously I could get a 2 channel thing like the EBS Microbass II, but with the SVT you can just set up 1 channel for the Spector and the other for the P.
Would prefer if the SVT had 2 speakons at the back, also an 8 ohm option might be nice, maybe.
Probably gonna go for a Bergantino NV610 or 412 (leaning towards the 412 actually - both maybe??!!). I think I'll then hold the record for the rig that's so much beyond the ability of the player!

Further thoughts as they occur.

Steve

Have you tried running a short patch cable from ch. 1 to ch. 2 on the SVT? I know that would take away from the 2 bass idea, but the sound is incredible. Cheers.

OK, I looked on the net and I see what you mean now. Any possibility of damaging anything though?

What exactly is going on when you do this? I have tried it and it definitely adds a little something. Are you just getting more eq tweakability, there's no extra power or anything coming through is there?
Incidentally, for anyone who's interested, to me at least the Ampeg is a much nicer tone, more rich and "real" sounding somehow. Have got this little buzz on the Ampeg though, which I've mentioned in another thread http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showth...1#post10324561
