Deep Awesome Bass Exept Low 'G'

Sign in to disble this ad
My set up is a GK Fusion 550 and Avatar B212 Neo. I get such awesome thunderous reverberating Earth shaking pure deep Bass except with the low G note. Don't get me wrong. It still sounds very good but not like every other note. Is it just something about the Low G? Something else that I've observed is I crank up the volume to like 3/4's on Master and Gain and it's loud but doesn't really sound that loud. It's in a small completely closed off dedicated Music room. However, at Band practice I have the settings on about 1/4 and everyone is complaining I'm way too loud. I guess maybe all this is the 3 decades I've stood next to loud drummers.

It could certainly be the room, small rooms tend to have difficulties like this. Or it could be a dead spot on your bass too...That does happen as well.

Low G? Are you detuned? If you tuned a B string to G the fundamental would be WAY to low for 99% of the cabs out there.
Small room with high power = cancellation by the room, you exceeded the point of diminishing returns.

It could be the room. Small rooms especially are problematic with cancellation modes.

If you mean low G on the E-string, you can get some nasty sounds out of the first five frets of the E-string by having either:

1) A nut that's too high
2) A fret (or frets) badly in need of dressing

I would suggest:
Play your bass into headphones and see if it's still there. If it is, it's your bass setup and time to go talk to a bass tech.

Yeah, I mean the G on the E string. Not tuned down or anything. Anyway, I guess I'm not explaining it clear and I actually just plugged in another Bass to test it. I like to get it as Bassy as I can just for the fun of it, so Bassy it would be totally unrealistic to play that way with a Band. Ok, it seems that anything below the B on the E string in has more of a growl whereas notes at B and above seem to be just pure deep Bass. Probably the nature of the 12" Neo's. Still sounds awesome below the B, but just not that vibrate your fillings out Bass. I'm sure I could rarely have it even near that loud in a public setting unless it was Outdoors or everyone would be covering their ears (Like when I saw West, Bruce & Lange in the 70's at the Anaheim Convention Center and Jack's Bass was so loud it felt like it was grinding my body apart. LOL). I haven't tried the 550 in a public setting yet cuz I just got the 550 Wed. My old Band asked me if I wanted to sit in with them tonite. I asked if they were getting paid and they said beer and food and I declined. Too old to put up with their $*#t for free.

You are not using the "Deep" switch are you? With my NEO 412 it gets "thick" sounding on the lower registers, not as resonant. Maybe air leaks in the cab? Check the speaker mounting fasteners on the Avatar.

It's not just fret rattle, is it? If so it could be that the action is too low on that E string.

Say more about this "growl."

What kind of bass? does it do this with other amps?

Some basses don't have as much volume on the lower notes on the E string. I noticed this with my old Rick - it still sounded cool, just not a lot of fundamental - to be honest, it sounded close to the Geddy Lee sound on the low G to F on the old recordings when he used one.
