Gotta buy a cab soon and I have no idea where to start! We have an awesome store here locally that has a ton of high end stuff and a lot of guitar centers that have crazy deals on used gear.

Tone I'm going for is pretty punchy with some grind. I have two basses that are completely different. A p that has great old school tone and a j that has awesome punch and growl. I play a wide range of music but I generally keep my tone tight, punchy, and I like a little bit of natural grind. Kind of Geddy Lee like but not sooooooo bright. I have no idea what to consider so I'm just considering all of it. But since there's a million choices out these days I was wondering if you could help me, in just a few words, describe the general tone of these cab companies. Or just. Make a suggestion about what I should look at. Thanks

So here's the companies I can get my hands on.... Gonna get a 4x10 unless you think a different cab set up would be better . The lighter the better. Don't really have a budget.

What kind of head and wattage will you be using? Are the basses active-passive?

IMHO, you need to try them out for yourself, as much as possible. Also go hear bands that have bassists with cabs that interest you. Buy used.

4x10s are kind of stuck in old tech realm now, you can do better with other configurations, and that is a terrible generalisation, but works in practice.

Playing an 800rb. One passive p and one active j. Would really like to get a good grind without a pedal. Prolly getting an svt-vr soon. Definitely gonna buy used if i can find something. I don't ever buy new really. Heard SWR cabs were pretty punchy? Any thoughts?

As for the head, I've used a 1001 head with these:avatar b210 neo, Epifani UL310,EBS 210, Ashdown Mag series 115 and an Ampeg 410 ported cab. I alternated between these depending on the venue. The band I was in played mostly dance, funk and disco. All cabs sounded great. I also work with a modern rock band and the only thing that cut through strong was my Ampeg. The other cabs made me sound like a funk player trying to rock out. Hope that helps some what.

Aguilar: Warm, round. Good mids.

Avatar: Punchy, albeit somewhat undisciplined.

Ashdown: Dark. Moody.

Bergantino: Effervescent, but with a high-mid aftertaste.

EA: Sterile, cold. Prudish, even.

GK: Naughty.

Schroeder: Illegitimate.

SWR: Mamby-pamby.

EBS: Terse.

Mesa: Possibly inebriated.

Eden: Aloof.

Epifani: Evangelical.

IMO/IME/YMMV. They are all probably fine.

Yeah. Also I forgot "dirty", "polite", and "grumpy".
