A-Design REDDI in live setting?

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone have experience using a the REDDI as part of their signal chain in a live situation, e.g. as part of the signal actually running to your amplifier, not just as a DI to the board? Just curious to know how practical/effective this would be.

Yep...I just used it last night.

It's got a thru jack just like any other DI, so you'd plug your bass straight into the REDDI, use the thru to connect to your amp, and then you've got the XLR going to FOH and your amp sitting on stage with you. I don't believe that will add any colr to your rig, just to FOH.

Unless you meant getting the coloration from the REDDI into your rig, in which case I'm not sure you'd be able to do that unless you had an amp that liked a balanced signal.

Yeah, I was more interested in the unbalanced vs. balanced distinction. Can you just use an adapter cable? My sense is the answer is 'no', because well, nothing ever seems to be that easy, ever... But I also feel like it wouldn't be impossible either, and was wondering what kind of hoops you'd have to jump through to actually make it work.

You can use an adapter to make the physical connections just fine, but the output signal of the REDDI vs. the input sensitivity (?) on the amp would be the concern. Most amps want an instrument level signal. The REDDI puts out a much stronger signal (mic or line level...I forget). Even with the Level Control on the REDDI turned way down it's a hot signal. I've had some trouble clipping the preamps of some lesser interfaces and mixers. It really seems to like to be plugged into high end gear.

Someone else can much better explain the technical details than me, but that's my basic understanding.

I'm not really sure what you'd benefit from doing that though. You've got no tone shaping, so it would just be adding the coloration of the REDDI into the amp. If you want a tube tone in an amp a Mesa Walkabout, GB Streamliner, or full on tube amp would probably be a better/lighter/smaller option. If you don't already own a REDDI, getting one of those wouldn't cost that much more either.

I use mine EVERYWHERE i go. (Studio and Live) Like the others have said... it has no tonal coloring on the amp. Since i use my amp for personal monitor and not fillin the house im ok with that. The DI as you know receives all the love, which IMO is all that matters to me...

If you have a Markbass LMII it has a balnced input on the front. Plug the REDDI from the XLR right into the amp. I don't know of another amp that allows you to do that.
